It’s heeere…..Microsoft Corp. finished the largest-ever interim update for its XP Windows operating system.
The goal: to provide lots of fixes and improvements meant to plug the security problems. And now there’s one tiny task: getting it on all of the computers out there…

This one is going to be *real* interesting. The SP will lock down just about every security feature by default. Lots of computers are going to stop working until people figure out how to open up the ports (etc.) that they need to hit the internet, view other machines on their home networks. I predict mass confusion for the general public!
This is long overdue. Microsoft hasn’t had a new OS for several years. I’ve read the new SP will shut down some legacy programs. The message is, stay current or wither on the vine.
Microsoft will never get a break. When everything was wide open, people found the OS simple to use, but unsecure. Now, they’ll make it secure, but people are going to find computers aren’t the easiest thing to use and Microsoft will get slammed.
I have a difficult time at work informing people that you can have simplicity or security, never both.
I’ve been using SP2 since RC1 and I found it to be pretty good. In fact, I was surprised at how little it interfered with my surfing, e-mailing, etc.
Of course, I must now go dance around an open fire and bark at the moon to ward off the evil spirits.
Heh.
