D-Day — great. But does France really “owe America” forever? And if so, what form does payment of that debt take?

I don’t think it takes the form Tom Lantos does.

I agree Ron, but I don’t think Lantos is quite saying “you owe us, you must always go along with us.”

Seems to me it was more an appeal for Chirac to recall the values, dedication, and sacrifice that it took for us to get where we are.

I would say that America owes as much to France as France ever owed to America.

Call it even.

I think if anything is owed anyone we kinda both owe each other some major slack in the foreign policy dpt.

Which I mean to say is France should shut the F*ck Up about our foreign misadventures since it was one of them that got them out of the trouble they were in.

In return we’ll also shut the f*ck up when they go invade someone for their own foreign policy reasons. Which if I recall we’ve done a pretty fair job of.

Well, well, well… Dean’s World still has Francophiles. I thought he sprayed for those years ago.

This OpinionJournal piece busts the myth of Franco-American friendship. Here’s a taste:

At the Treaty of Paris negotiations, the French crown secretly and successfully urged Britain to deny the colonists’ claims west of the Alleghenies. Relations were no better during the early days of the American republic. One of the first ministers France sent to the U.S. was Citizen Genet, a man who did everything he could to undermine President Washington’s determination to keep his country neutral in the war France had declared on Britain in 1793. A few years later the French foreign minister Talleyrand demanded a large bribe before he would meet with American diplomats in what became known as the XYZ Affair. This flap led to a series of naval skirmishes–the first war waged by the U.S. against anybody.

The sooner that place completely dissolves in the EU, the better.

Let’s not forget French support for the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Michael, I think we paid France back for her (reluctant) help for General Washington when we sent our boys over there back in 1917. Still, I confess I get all choked up when I think about General Pershing walking up to a certain tomb, saluting, and saying “Lafayette; we are here!”

Maybe if the French people weren’t such rude buggers, collectively speaking…

If only more people in the world were willing to let bygones be bygones.

France owes the U.S. nothing, because if they owed even the smallest measure, then the debt would be too large to ever repay.
