High Veteran Suicide Rate A Myth?

Tom Maquire has several interesting links.

Methinks this is going to be much like the once-popular meme of Viet Nam veterans as drug-addled poverty-ridden mental cases.

I never concern myself with anyone else pulling the plug on their own life. All things considered, your life is yours to dispose of, if that’s the way you think you want it to end.

Nor do I think military veterans are any more likely to commit suicide than businessmen, aging actresses and beauty queens, losing politicians, or any other cross-section of american humanity.

Actually, suicide rates amongst military members are slightly higher than the rest of the population, but that could be slightly misleading since the most likely person to commit suicide is a male aged 18-35. Guess what the military happens to have plenty of? That’s right, men aged 18-35.

Suicide rate in the United States: 10.8 per 100,000.

Suicide rate in the U.S. Army: 17.2 per 100,000.

These are official Army stats from CY 2006.

Okay, Valjean. I stand corrected.

But you have to admit that suicide is one way of going AWOL without worrying about the consequences.
