Comment Moderation

Based on urgings from others, for now Dean’s World comments are open. They are mildly moderated, in the sense that if you haven’t posted a comment on the new system before, you get stuck in moderation, and then I approve your comments and you’re approved (unless I don’t). I’m skeptical that this can last, but we’ll see what we see. I do hereby decree amnesty for anyone who got banned in the past who wants to come back, so long as you know better than to be a troll or nasty to the host. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this works.

Welcome to the new Dean’s World. Hope you like it.

Testing…

Hello new Dean’s World.

Dean likes poop. He cuddles with poop. He eats poop. Dean likes poop.

For my first attempt at being a troll I think that’s not half bad.

Good luck. I had one heck of a time banning a moonbat at my site. I finally had to ban an entire IP range at his ISP – and he still manages to get through from time to time.

not to harp, but am i the only one who finds this site harder to read than the other one? too white, or something. and i’d collapse it down to one sidebar and a wider area for the posts themselves. they seem squashed in the middle.

on the plus side the new site loads much faster for me.

Verrry Nice, Dean!

This thing confuses me. I had a thought provoking post about poop ready to go but I guess it has to get approved but now I see I’m logged in and my comments don’t need approval. Do I always have to go to the admin page to do this? I liked it on the old blog better where I could login on the comment thread.

I agree with zach. The post area should be wider.

I’ve commented about the readability before- it hasn’t gotten any better, though if you bump up the text size, it’s pretty good. Of course, then the center column is even narrower…

Trying to get re-registered…

Thank you!

Much improved for me. I could hardly read the old site as the two side columns overlapped text in the center column. I was missing half a dozen words from both the left and the right on every line and relied on context to fill in the blanks.

Hey … like the new look, Dean.

The only place I ever got banned from was Babalu Blog. Because I told the moderator that I thought whoring was built into the Cuban culture long before Castro came to power. Or some such typical Arnold Harris notion held with great conviction.

I think I came close on Dean’s World many years ago for publicly praising Joe McCarthy. It was Rosemary who saved my ass on that one, if I recall.

Aside from all that, I’m still the same old cranky curmudgeon that I’ve been ever since I ceased being a young cranky curmudgeon about 50 years ago.

Anyway, whose birthday are you celebrating that caused you to amnesty all the trolls and troublemakers who have beset you over the years?

Test.

14 Kevin D. March 4, 2008 at 12:58 pm

WTF!? This blog is the devil. I post two comments that don’t get posted and then I do a test one and it does.

I hate this place.

15 Dean Esmay March 4, 2008 at 1:01 pm

We hate you too Kevin. :-)

In any case, we’ll have bumps in the road like this during the first week or so, and to be frank I suspect that the open comments thing is not going to last. Brian Wallace convinced me to try it so we will. In the meantime, you somehow got marked as spam. I un-spammed you, so your missing comments should appear now and you probably won’t have any further trouble.

16 Scott Kirwin March 4, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Yo Dean
Have you considered a two column theme? Your third column seems wasted, and the content could appear on the left. That would free up more space for content.

See this site for lots of theme goodness.

I don’t want you to be Frank. I want you to be Dean. I’ll let Frank J. be Frank.

And don’t call me Shirley.

18 Arnold Harris March 4, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Dean,

If you truly are doing this as a test, why don’t you do all your commenters a big fat but inexpensive favor and add an afterpost screen editor so we can pull out our own typos and correct insane grammar? That’s nmber one.

Number two is that we used to have an opportunity to display what we had written so we could see how it looks in print before submitting the comment. What’s chances of bringing that back.

Number three is that this little e-Bay buyer size box is just too damned small. Is there some way we can expand its height while we are working in it?

Number four, collectively, are all the other bitchings about this and that, whatever the hell they were.

Actually on the layout, maybe the background could be a little greyer to be easier on the eyes, and… the central column could be a little wider?

Anyway. Yay 4 amnesty

Why are some links within comments bright blue underlined and some with a faint gray background. And is preview turned off or something?

Inv, if you’ve visited the link, it changes to the gray background. That’s a style selection Dean made, and can change easily should he decide.

It’s common styling to deemphasize visited links; but I think this goes past deemphasizing, and nearly into hiding. I literally lose links I might want to revisit, because the gray is so subtle.

Thanks, Martin!

It seems a little less faint a shade of gray today
