Spanish muslims have it tougher than we softies here in the US. Don’t take your mosque for granted.

Like you say, this is mind-bogglingly short sighted. The Spanish government already acknowledges that the current situation of many small and ad-hoc mosques are a security nightmare, so those in opposition really have no leg other than intolerance to stand on. One of the unfortunate cases where the government has a legitimate responsibility to come in and enforce the right-thing-to-do.

I certainly think that the Spanish Government should make sure that Muslims wanting to aquire land for a Mosque have no more problems then Christians who wish the same thing.

However, that is not at all the same as having the Government purchase lands and supply facilities for religious groups. Government has no place in deciding which religiouns are, or are not, legitimate. Religious groups should have the rights of the individuals that make them up, neither more nor less.

I support religious freedom and so I support Muslims being allowed to build Mosques in Spain. But, since I support religious freedom, I also support Christians, Jews, Pagans, etc. being allowed to build whatever religious temple they wish in Mecca. So Aziz, are you going to join me in calling for universal religious freedoms or are you just going to slither away and ignore a non-Muslim’s call on a Muslim to practice what he preaches?
