I am by no means an Obama supporter–it’s extremely unlikely that he’ll get my vote–but I think that’s the most honest and truthful speech on race relations I’ve ever heard from a sitting politician. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen any politician speak bluntly about the irritation working and middle class white voters feel on these issues, without condemning it as racist. Ditto the irritation black voters often feel. Color me impressed.

I am now quite certain this US Senator Obama, who now wants to be President Obama, listened to Reverend “GodDamnAmerica Wright” on hundreds of occasions over almost 30 years of attendance in his hate-filled church, almost certainly nodding his head in agreement and shouting occasional support for whatever the evil and treasonous bastard was preaching to all his flock.
And now he is lying to the whole United States about what he heard, when he heard it, how often he heard it, and maybe why he didn’t just stand up and tell off this rat, like any man of honor would have done?
This Obama is nothing but a fake prophet; a poseur acts comes across like an Ivy League graduate student among his white american supporters, like a southside Chicago dude among his black american supporters, like a kenyan tribesman when he visits East Africa. Probably, he will act like a reincarnation of the abbasidi qalifs when he visits any of the islamic states.
I might have learned to trust him, but only right up to point where I saw him waffling over his connections to this vile America-hating preacher in Chicago.
So fuck him. I hope Senator Clinton cleans the floor with him in Pennsylvania on April 22.
And all the Democratic Party honchos who annointed him back in February, when it looked like he was going to ascend to heaven from some sort of portable crucifix on which he could nail himself up to, that if you nominate this poseur, you will all but guarantee the inauguration of President John McCain on Jan 20, 2009.

And any of you do think the shit I have described above will not have permanent political legs?
Don’t even begin to fool yourselves.

yay for Arnold – not fooled into forgetting what a vile prick that pastor is by a stupid speech by a cheap pol.
Eloquent speech — enjoyed many parts of it.
To be courageous, though, we would need Obama to not glide over the 3 central problems facing the modern day Black Community:
1. Enormously high drop-out rates for High School. I think in Oakland, CA it is nearly 50%
2. Way too many out of wedlock births. Raising kids without loyal, devoted Fathers is generally bad;
3. Black on Black crime. I read somewhere that Blacks (14% of US Population) comprise 50% of the murder victims. And, about 94% of the perps for these murders are Blacks.
If well-meaning whites and blacks (which I believe are a large majority of folks) could address the above 3 issues, united, it would be very good for the country.
He gives excellent speeches, but he can’t just explain this 20-year relationship away with airy rhetoric.
I hope that with this speech, we can put the silly Rev. Wright issue behind us.
I read it before I watched it, and I am unimpressed. “Everybody is racist, but if you just elect me, I will used fasci… I mean, populism to make everything ok.”

Arnold,
You old softie.
I didn’t like the speech as much as you did.
He is not elevating America, he’s infantilizing it, or rather, taking advantage of infantilization already in progress.
“Ask not what you can do for yourself, ask what I can do for you, even if you’re white.”
The anti-Kennedy
Pennywit,
Why do you say the Rev. Wright stuff is silly and why would one speech put behind a 20 year relationship?
I was awfully shocked the first time I saw the Wright video, and I have to say, it says quite a bit about Obama’s judgement. As of today, I’m with Arnold – this is a deal breaker for me.
Not that I can neccessarily vote for McCain either, but….. Obama? Not anymore.
Snippet, I didn’t even watch or listen to the senator’s performance. I read statements with my eyes and my brain. I would have made an exception for Winston Spencer Churcill. But sure as hell not for Barack Hussein Obama.

Arnold,
I didn’t either. I got the gist.
One “gist:” His white grandmothers private confession that she feels threatened by black men (A rational fear – sorry, but it just is) is presented as ballast to The Good Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s P-U-B-L-I-C exhortations to blame whitey for all of their problems, to celebrate the slaughter of Americans and to HATE – there is simply no other word for it- white Americans is insulting in the extreme.
One of many, many things that sticks in my craw is the simple fact that the message here – one of unapologetic and joyful hate – is so obviously antithetical to the teachings of Christ that all reasonable and good looking people can only conclude the the good reverend’s real allegiance is to something other than the teachings of Jesus.
I am not a Christian, but I have no stomach for Marxism in Christian robes (and Obama apparently does). It just irritates me for some strange reason that my therapist can tease out some day.
If Obama had wandered in to one of this jerk’s sermons, then left in disgust, I’d have no problem that he was once one of his parishioners, but that’s not exactly the way the last twenty years went.
This describes my problems with him better than I can. She concludes that it isn’t a big deal and is excusable; I disagree with that.
