Are You a Reader of Westerns?

If you are, you probably realize new books in this genre are in short supply. These days, they are the “poor relation” of the publishing business. Take heart, though, the indie publishers haven’t forgotten the dedicated readers of Western novels.

There are some new ones right here!

The last time I read Westerns was when I was 8 or 9. I must say that I haven’t missed them in the 50+ years since.

Not my cup of tea, I guess…

I used to be a big fan. Read pretty much everything Lous L’Amour and Zane Grey wrote. Even read a few other authors. Of course I also devour sci-fi, fantasy, contemporary and other oddball genres so I guess I’m not a good indicator.

However, I have not read a western book since the last Lonesome Dove novel…

At the library, we have a surprising number of dedicated readers of Westerns who check ‘em out by the armload. This makes our collection look about 30% smaller than it actually is.

Their major complaint is that there are never enough new ones. Mainstream publishing has largely deserted this genre, which I find surprising since they are so often read (at least by the military).

I’m not much of a fan of the Western genre, but my dad sure was. He was a voracious and fast reader, and would read almost an entire Louis L’Amour with his morning coffee. He also read a lot of sci-fi, and I guess that’s where I got my love for it. Although a different media, I think he would have really enjoyed “Firefly/Serenity,” with its combing the two.
