OK, I Take It Back

She’s admitted the incident didn’t happen, and hasn’t given any explanation I can find other than it was a “misstatement.” How stupid. So I take back my earlier comments that she might have conflated two different memories.

Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

But I understand. I really do. I once had a boss whose response to even a simple question like “What time is it?” was “Hmmm, what answer will make me look good?” So I’m very familiar with pathological, self-aggrandizing lying. For him, truth was less important than image, even when the lie could be easily disproven. It became too difficult to tell when he was telling the truth, and I stopped trusting him completely.

The Clinton machine successfully promoted the idea that lying publically (and under oath) about inconsequential things like sex is perfectly OK, and in fact is the norm, to be expected. I do not agree in general, but I acknowledge that there is a political element that embraces this notion (which to me seems almost a definition of amoral, if not immoral). I ascribe to the “Thou shalt not bear false witness” frame; I don’t always make it but I try, and (to the best of my recollection) I always confess if I make it up and someone calls me on it.

Did you hear the “actuality” (the recording of her statement)? I never heard a more teeth-clenched, angry “apology.” And the wording of it!

“So I made a mistake. That happens. It shows I’m human, which for some people is a revelation.”

It wasn’t meant as a joke. It sure didn’t sound like a joke.

I do not like this lady one little bit.

If I were going to read into this little mishap, my first thought would be something like “Those of us who really have come under sniper fire aren’t going to take this well”. It isn’t something about which one’s memory gets hazy.

That, of course, led me to a second conclusion from which to jump, which was that Sen. Clinton must have already written off the votes of servicemembers if she is willing to say such a thing and not even consider the consequences.

Now if I was an alarmist, I would think that if she is already willing to discount the votes and attitudes of servicemembers before she takes office, may God have additional mercy on the enlisted man once she takes the position of Commander. But I don’t really think she’s going to get the job.

Am I reading too much into it?

Dean, seriously dude, I’m starting to wonder about you and the Clintons. Seriously.

If Hillary Clinton, as the First Lady of the United States of America, or even as teh First Lady of the State of Arkansas, had been exposed to sniper fire in a foreign country and had to duck and run for cover to avoid it, that would have been one of the biggest stories of the year. There is no way that we would not have known about it. Hell, they would have made a TV movie out of the event. So to even CONSIDER the possibility that Hillary had confused two events is simply a stunning statement. Confused with WHAT Dean, the OTHER time she had to go serpentine on the tarmac?

I mean seriously Dean… what happened to your critical thinking skills man? ;-)

A few years ago, President Bush was visiting an Eastern European country–Ukraine I think, but I’m not sure–and had a grenade lobbed at him. He was unhurt because, fortunately, it didn’t go off. Did you hear about it? Almost no one did. This was an assassination attempt on a sitting President. I was one of the very few people who noticed. No one was hurt, and it was in a distant country without a lot of press present, so it got minimal play.

She’s been followed around closely by a Secret Service detail every single day for the last, let’s see… about 16 years? Ever since her husband was running for the Democratic nomination in 1992 or maybe 1991. Every single day since then. With chatter about someone trying to kill or kidnap her, her husband, or her daughter pretty much on a daily basis. Even as a Senator, she would have them with her constantly–currently, all members of the First Family get it for ten years *after* leaving office. So she’s had them ever since.

Going into a war zone would only heighten all that.

It’s entirely plausible that the First Lady was informed that there was concern over snipers and they needed to scramble. It’s entirely plausible that this happened somewhere and she only *thought* it was Bosnia in retrospect. It may have been that there were no actual snipers but concern that there would be. It’s possible that their limo got shot at at some point but no one was hurt. All of this is possible.

There are plausible explanations other than “she lied.” However, she hasn’t come forward with any, despite an opportunity to do so. So… there’s not much more to say.
