Earth hour

Google is telling us to all turn our lights out for an hour at 8 PM tonight. I was going to write a snarky post comparing this to the silly chain letters urging us not to buy gas a particular day in order to send a message (that message being “I cannot do without your product for more than one day”), but it seems that Harvey of imao.us has posted a much better snark about Earth Hour than I could ever dream of writing.

What is with Google ?

I turn the lights out every single night before hitting the snooze place. And I usually wake up when the kitty who somehow sees without daylight comes thundering down the hall chasing unknown enemies or seeking window ledges to attack suspected outdoors kitties, possums or skunks knowing well of course then can’t get in to get her.

Apparently, Google going black is actually using more energy than keeping the page white.

Way.To.Go!!!

Tim Blair has several different links commemorating this auspicious occasion.

I swear, people are such dumbasses….

No, no, no. Using more energy is fine and dandy, so long as you’re doing it to promote environmental awareness. It’s only using energy for useful or enjoyable purposes that’s evil.

Maybe we should call one who wishes to use less energy a ‘Do lesser’; you need energy to do anything. Sometimes it’s wise to conserve energy, your own energy, so that you can effectively do more. I wish every conservationists would say three times every morning ‘I am Man in the image of G-d, and therfore this world is mine, to do unto it and carry out with it his will’.

We should not stop doing until we are dead.

With or without acknowledment

It’s “mandatory theatre”, participation in which (by intent) alters perspective of right and wrong.

I find it deeply disturbing.

As I said in the comments at Techcrunch before it generated into to an ugly brawl over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it reminds me of a Dilbert cartoon (Earth hour, that is, not the Israeli-Palestinian conflict).
