Obama’s Latest Ad

I have never entirely understood the urge to specially tax so-called “windfall profits.” And I’m not sure that I believe that the Senator has the best plan to achieve energy independence. Still, it’s a pretty good commercial, and should appeal to a lot of voters, including a lot of centrists.

The ad is playing over and over in the Philly market. Once again empty promises, unless of course he actually does the things he says in which case those of you who are under the age of 28 will get to see what life was like under the Carter administration.

One can’t deny that the guy is a taxer and spender. He’s got a very long laundry-list of government projects, and little hint how to pay for them other than stopping the Iraq War and taxing “the rich”. As many have shown, even if the War ended tomorrow, and taxes on everyone with incomes over $100K rolled back to levels of the 1970s, there wouldn’t be enough money to cover all of Obama’s programs. And that’s assuming that the genuinely rich didn’t have skilled tax advisers who’d make sure that they minimized their taxes.

On that note, a thing that impressed me about Obama is his tax return: he is either genuinely “patriotic” in the self-taxing sense of the word, or he’s extremely badly advised on tax matters. He and Michelle could have saved $40K+/year in taxes by having a SEP-IRA on the income from his book and his&her 401K/403Bs (not sure what Congresscritters get) on their W2 income…

I find it ironic that he says “I don’t take money from oil companies”, and then two seconds later proposes a “windfall profits” tax which would take money from oil companies.

Obama neglected to say that Exxon paid $30 billion in income taxes.
Obama will make Carter look good.

The I don’t take personal money from big oil so I am going to take money by force of government action makes him seem like an amatuer gangsters (as opposed to the professionals that have years of experience in congress). I really don’t know which makes me sadder.

I think the point is that computer illiteracy IS an issue. Our world has changed dramatically, and a basic understanding of technology is required to make real-world decisions. How can McCain have an opinion on Net Nuetrality, for example, if he doesn’t understand how people use the internet? How can McCain have an opinion on combating cybercrime when he can’t even get online? How can McCain have an opinion on protecting privacy in cyberspace when he has no clue how it works?

The world has changed, and the internet is a major part of that change. Understanding it is vital to staying ahead of the curve.

Furthermore, check these clash videos I found yesterday about the US Presidential candidates have talked taxes. Well, it’s entitled Obama v. McCain on Taxes. Watch these statements – then vote in http://clashorama.com/index.php?id=194
