Great job. It’s sorta of a shame that it’s usually only negative situations that bring out the fullest exercise of man’s powers. May you muster the same powers in the pursuit of good that you are in the flight from evil. Because, G-d knows, we need you.
Dean, I know all about willpower. It never has been liquor for me; but it certainly was cigarettes. Back in June 1972, when I was a specialized writer for a PR firm representing the American College of Chest Physicians, I got a few eyefulls of autopsied lungs of smokers. Almost immediately afterward, I spun my last coffin nail out the window of my car onto a Chicago street, muttered after it “so long, sucker!”. And that was it. Never again got any of that into my lungs.
Willpower? You bet your ass it was.
But I think I may have told you this story before some time or other…
Anyway, maybe for you addiction to the bottle is tougher. If so, stick with abstinence. Like a good RC is supposed to do.
And one day, your kids will love you all the more for what you accomplished, when their are old enough to understand adult problems such as addiction to drugs and alcohol.
Quitting smoking required willpower. This requires something more–a complete change in life outlook. I’m still working on it.
Alcohol is insidious because it eventually takes away your ability to feel pleasure or at all “normal” unless you have some of it in your system. In a way, you almost have to take it on faith that you’ll be able to enjoy life again. That’s not always easy to see. But slowly it’s coming along, as I work the program.
I love what Naftali said…”May you muster the same powers in the pursuit of good that you are in the flight from evil. Because, G-d knows, we need you.”
Do NOT let a day go by where you think I don’t need you around too. The love I feel can never be expressed in words.

Five months, eh?
Well, my friend. I salute you for sticktoitiveness. Which is a useful manifestation of willpower.

Thanks. Although, willpower has surprisingly less to do with it than I once thought, which is why I failed the last time after 90 days…
Congratulate yourself for your success but don’t forget that you’re one drink away from blowing it all.
Yep.
AA Dean? As the daughter of a former alcoholic (he never did quit, but he passed away), I echo the support here and admire you for your five months.
Here here!!!!
Great, kid. Don’t get cocky.
