Dr. Helen takes a look.
Personally I just think women’s clothes generally lack pockets because they don’t like the way it interferes with the lines they want their clothes to have. But I generally have come to think that women get what they ask for in this society.

i think just about everybody in this society gets what they ask for. they just have to buy it. isn’t that how capitalism works?
Yeah, pretty much. Although the advertising industry exerts some influence, mostly if you look at how marketing works it’s a matter of selling people what they already want.
Women also generally have more stuff they feel the need to carry around. I carry my wallet (right front pocket), my keys (left front pocket), and my cell phone (left front pocket or jacket pocket). If I felt the need to also carry around chap stick, gloves, makeup, stamps, pepper spray, and an address book everywhere I went, I’d probably carry a purse, too.
I do have a bag for papers and books, but it lives on my desk at work and in the corner of my dining room at home rather than being something I constantly carry around with me.
I admit to envying women their purses a bit. I get used to carrying a lot of stuff around in my winter jacket pockets, and every Spring I have to start finding somewhere else to keep my stuff once it looks silly to be carrying around a parka.
I have a man-bag, and I have for years, but it’s not something I generally carry with me unless I need books, pens, legal pads, or other big things of the like. Otherwise, it’s wallet in back right pocket, cell in front right pocket, and keys on belt loop on the left. I don’t usually deal with change because I have direct deposit and I pretty much pay for everything with plastic.
I got yer man-bag right here, baby…
(Sorry, couldn’t help myself.)
I quit carrying a purse over 20 years ago, except on rare occasions when I’m dressed up. All I carry are my keys, license and a couple of cards in my pockets. Like Dean I use my coat pockets to carry other stuff for 3 seasons and have a dilemma in the summer. I may start to carry one in the summer – but I’m so out of the habit I’m afraid I’ll leave it around all the time.
My purse turned into a fanny pack several years ago. My wallet has been downsized, and just one small compartment holds the necessities (wallet, reading glasses, rolaids, tylenol, tampon, barette, mints). The other compartments hold blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, small notepad, several pens, gloves, bandage shears, forceps, tape, penlight, mini maglight, albuterol, glucose tube. I think that’s all. I used to carry a hairbrush, but the barette takes care of any bad hair going on during a call. That’s just the purse-replacement bag. I have a jumpbag that goes with me on scene, but that’s only if I beat the ambulance to the scene.
