Be true to your teeth or they will be false to you.

Or should it read, be true to your teeth or they will let you know it.

I can’t figure out how to cancel comment on this timer thingie.

Do you have any of that contact pain killer? That’s always worked well for me. I can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s like the stuff Dentist’s use before they give you a shot.

Other than that, what I would do would depend on what the problem was. A broken tooth isn’t the same as a cavity.

It appears to be a filling that’s popped out.

I did get some topical stuff, and it’s soothing it somewhat, but it’s really flaring up. Dentist will see me tomorrow at 1:30 and given the condition of the tooth I wouldn’t be surprised if we just have to pull it. Especially because I’m between jobs, have no insurance, and I can’t frickin’ afford no root canal.

Anbesol, IIRC

For a popped filling I recommend bourbon. A broken tooth is more of a scotch sort of thing.

Seriously, one thing I’ve done in the past to help with popped out filings was to put some tooth wax over the spot to keep air from circulating into it. Tooth wax is the stuff that people used to wear over braces to keep from poking holes in their lips and cheeks all the time. I don’t even know if it’s sold anymore.

If you are taking pain killer, I’d recommend one that is an anti-inflammatory too.

By the way, a root canal should only be necessary if the tooth is abscessed. And in my experience if you are having that much pain from a popped out filling, you probably don’t have an abscess. For one thing, an abscess really does a number on the nerve, so that you don’t really have a pain in the tooth anymore, the pain of an abscess is in the gums and jaw. So if the pain is in the tooth, you probably just need a filling. If the pain is down deep in the gum and jaw, and erupts like someone is shoving a dagger in your jaw when you tap the tooth, then you might be talking about a root canal.

These days I would be surprised if a filling is much more expensive than pulling a tooth, so I’m hoping for the best for you.

When I was a child my parents used to get some stuff in a glass tube. It was several kinds of herbs in just enough solution to keep it good and moist.

I don’t know what it consisted of, or what it was called, but it was the best think I ever used for a toothache. OTOH maybe mild toothaches just seemed worse when I was a child. It’s hard to remember that far back.

When it rains, huh…
Tell him your situation. Maybe he can do a temporary filling

If you can swing it still tonight, go to a local mega chain drugstore (Rite Aid, Walgreen’s, CVS). They’ve got local anesthetics and temporary fillings that will get you through the night. Might cost you $10. Right next to the toothpastes.

If you can’t make it there, take 2 ibuprofens, and if that doesn’t help within an hour, take 2 more.

Yes, booze will work, as a rinse and ingested. But don’t go there!

3-4 advil and a good dose of caffeine (a cup of coffee or the equivilent). Caffeine enhances the effectiveness of ibuprofin.

Oh, and BTW, I’m not a dentist.

But I did lose a filling while traveling a couple months ago!

Took me a week to get in to see a dentist, and I tried everything available OTC.

Toothache pain is the worst. I can usually tolerate a fair amount of pain, even headaches, but I am defenseless against toothaches. Earaches are a close second.

Clove oil applied liberally to the tooth works pretty well. It numbs the tooth, like Anbesol, but I like it better because it doesn’t seem to numb the cheek or tongue as much.
