The toothache was the worst I ever had, and my fears were realized: it’s severely infected, meaning it’s either a root canal or an extraction. I opted for the extraction. However, it’s so infected he didn’t want to amputate today, so he sent me home with painkillers and antibiotics. And, I’m not supposed to drive.
Guess I’ll be playing a lot of Halo 3.
One weird thing though: when my teeth don’t hurt, they itch. How the heck do teeth itch? Scratching doesn’t help, as you might imagine….

Yay for painkillers!
You have no idea how close I was to going for whisky, but I figured I’d probably be better off shooting myself than doing that. Although shooting myself probably would have been a relief. Yeesh, how can a tooth hurt so damned bad?
Hypoascorbemia. Check your plasma level of vitC. Given the scale of infection and recent life stressors you’re a perfect candidate for subclinical scurvy. Laugh if you will, but it’s an insidious, pernicious condition if left untreated. Most allopaths will never bother to look.

You don’t necessarily have to lose the tooth. I had an infected tooth years ago and was scheduled for extraction and put on antibiotics. Had a trip planned and had some insurance coverage issues and well – I never did get the tooth pulled. That was um about 8 years ago! It never bothered me again – so far!
Keep yourself entertained, Dean…

…just use safety scissors, OK?
Dean:
If the nerve and blood vessel in the tooth are infected, you will probably need a root canal.
By the way, I’m sorry about the “bourbon” reference I was not thinking when I posted that. I was only kidding anway, but it was an insensitive comment.
I’ve had way too many root canals in my life, at least a dozen. I don’t want to go into my trials and tribulations with my own teeth. The itching thing you are describing was something I also experienced on occasion, usually when the antibiotics were killing the infection. I took it as a good sign.
By the way, as much as “root canal” has become synonymous with “dental torture” I have to tell you that in almost every case the root canal was a short period of discomfort that led almost immediately to a complete cessation of the blinding dagger-like pain of the abscess. I would imagine pulling it would be similar.
