Is McCain trying to have it both ways? Seems to me that his underlying analysis is correct: the economy is, by most "hard" metrics, quite healthy. There are, however, some very worrisome trouble spots - especially with respect to the financial markets. As in earlier times, we'll work our way out of them but not before some segments of the population (e.g. those who bought into sub-prime mortgages) endure some significant pain.

McCain recognizes the strengths and the weaknesses in our economy; he's in touch with the reality of the situation.

Obama is accusing McCain of "spinning" a harsh reality by making up a fantasy of American strength. On reflection, though, not only is Obama lying about what McCain said, he is himself "spinning" by trying to redefine reality so that it consists *only* of the troubled minority.

If anyone still believes that Obama has any "new" approach to politics other than the same cynical spin-doctoring, misrepresentation, half-truths and outright lying that has pervaded our politics for the past couple of decades, they are so deeply enmeshed in the Obama cult mentality that there is really no hope for them. They may just get Obama the nomination, but I wonder if there are enough of them to get him elected in the general election.

Great substantive answer by McCain. Weak political showboating by Obama.

Obama is definitely taking the quote out of context, but it seems to me that McCain here is trying to have it both ways.

Ms. Janelle,

I'm also looking forward to watching McCain attempt to debate on economic policy.
