So, who is aboard Galactica, is a major character, an overachiever, has been a bit of a loner and aloof, and is absent from the Last Supper photo?

You realized you just described who I’ve been saying the fifth Cylon is all along, right?

Tom Zarek.

Talk about an overachiever! He went from terrorist, to a seat on the Quorum, to Vice President, to President, back to VP. He was also behind Baltar’s ascension to the Presidency as well as Lee Adama’s current position on the Quorum. He’s been behind all kinds of major power plays.

What has Gaeta done that compares?

The fifth Cylon is Tom Zarek.

2 Aziz Poonawalla May 2, 2008 at 9:46 am

he was my second choice
but if you look at what gaeta has done.. he’s been pretty central
- stopped roslin’s ploy to prevent Baltar’s election
- "mystery cylon device in CiC"
- how did the fleet find us after that jump?
- adama is shot! oops, i foirgot to update the coordinates…
- uh oh, the other Four are in the new caprica resistance! better help them out…
the list goes on :)

- An election Zarek pretty much handed to Baltar with New Caprica.

- I thought it was Baltar that pointed it out and implied that it was that other Cylon, I can’t remember, that planeted it.

- Don’t know what you’re referring to.

- Everyone missed a step with that one.

- That doesn’t imply anything more than that Gaeta wanted to help.  Just like everyone else in the Resistance.

Further, Zarek is continuing to protect Baltar by making it known to Lee Adama what Roslin was trying to do with his cult.

Zarek keeps helping the man that the Cylon god has taken a shining to.

Zarek seems almost too obvious a choice to me. That’s the only reason I doubt Kevin’s view. He’s the first one who pops to mind, being all sinister and moving things behind the scenes and all. It fits well–too well.

5 Dean Esmay May 2, 2008 at 10:04 am

By the way, I’m still waiting for the explanation for how Tighe can possibly be a Cylon given that he goes back decades with Adama, before anyone even heard of human-looking Cylons. And there’s the matter of his wife. It wouldn’t surprise me if SHE was a Cylon though, in which case we shouldn’t be shocked if she makes a reappearance.

6 Kevin D. May 2, 2008 at 10:32 am

Zarek is the obvious choice?  You’re the first person I’ve ever heard say that.  Most people usually go for Gaeta and when I mention Zarek and why they admit they forgot about him.

Why did they forget about him?

Because he’s barely on the show.

7 Aziz Poonawalla May 2, 2008 at 10:36 am

ut barely being on the show is the main reason it cant be him. The Fifth needs to have been an active player. Zarek is very tangential.

lots more evidence here:

and one thing leaps out at me now in retrospect – what did Baltar whisper to Gaeta? "I know your secret" he says, then  leans over. Gaeta becomes enraged!

The "I know your secret" bit, if I recall, was something Moore mentioned in a podcast they fiddled with having Baltar say but it’s never actually spoken in the episode.

And if Baltar does know that Gaeta is one of the Final Five, at which point did he learn it and how?  He was at the Temple of Jupiter with D’anna in order to find out who the Final Five were.  She never told him.  He was captured immediately after her death by Tyrol.

There’s nothing that has been revealed in the show to indicate that Baltar knows who any of the Final Five are or, at the very least, that Gaeta was one of them.

10 Aziz Poonawalla May 2, 2008 at 11:56 am

B may no have known that G was a Final fiver, but I think he could suspect gaeta is cylon. who knows if he really suspected, or just was trying to goad G. but G’s reaction was instructive.

But, again, you’re assuming Baltar was 1) implying he knew Gaeta was a Cylon or 2) Gaeta took whatever Baltar said to indicate that Baltar had reason to believe he was a Cylon.

But this whole exercise is futile because we don’t know what Baltar said.

All we know is that he said something and it pissed Gaeta off enough to stab him.

And I think that if Baltar knew something about Gaeta that would damage his credibility, he’s had told his Lee Adama and the other bloke that were defending him at trial.

So, I think it’s far more likely that whatever Baltar said to Gaeta was of a personal nature.  Maybe he confided in Baltar about something and Baltar turned it back on him in a effort to upset him.

There’s nothing in that single incident that lends support to your belief that Gaeta is one of the Final Five.

12 J.A. Eddy May 2, 2008 at 12:48 pm

Dean-

You once speculated that Baltar was not a "Cylon" per se, but perhaps a ‘copy’ of the original Baltar, created by the Cylons when he was killed on Caprica in the opening attack. Your reasoning was quite sound at the time and nothing has happened to disprove that notion.

For those unfamiliar with this idea the speculation was that Baltar was actually killed in the initial attack, but the Cylons found him so useful they replicated him. Remember that Caprica Six WAS killed in the attack. Furthermore, when we next saw Baltar he just appeared in a group of refugees looking a little lost and bewildered.

I only bring this up because Tighe could have been introduced in a similar fashion. I think the final five are all unique, rather than multiple copies.

As for Gaeta- I’ve always wondered why he blatantly lied about the death warrant signing in Baltar’s trial…

Furthermore, when we next saw Baltar he just appeared in a group of refugees looking a little lost and bewildered.

He looked a little worse than that. He was banged up a bit. Further, I think it’s clear he wasn’t near the epicenter of a nuclear blast and if you look at the wave that hit his abode, it was mostly wind and caused structural damage. It was that structural damage that killed Caprica Six and her body largely shielded Baltar from the brunt of it.

As for Gaeta lying… what’s there to wonder about? He once idolized Baltar, he looked up to the man with puppy-like adoration only to see that his hero is a narcissistic coward. Love quickly gave way to bitter hate. And Gaeta probably genuinely blames Baltar for the atrocities on New Caprica and was the only one in a place to say Baltar willingly went along with the Cylon plans. Hell, I’m sure Tigh would have lied too if anything he could say would be believable.

There’s nothing more sinister to Gaeta’s actions than plain old human passions.

Whoever the fifth cylon is I am sure the writers are saving it to shock us. As for Tighe being a cylon, it is possible. Remember when Adama storms the hybrid factory in his youth? He is a lone wolf in this flashback and it is quite possible that Tighe had not entered the picture in Adama’s life quite yet. Tighe may have entered the picture after the cylon war and the development of the new human models. He may have been the first. I am unable to remember as to whether or not they talk about killing cylons together. It could be that Tighe’s memories of the Cylon War are fake and that his experiences with Adama are genuine.

Also, the other cylon reject the final five. It could be possible that the final five were traitorous to begin with which would explain why they hold such pivotal positions in rebellions against them. All of the four were revolutionaries on New Caprica.

I like Aziz’s notion that Gaeta is the Cylon but something is missing. The other four of the five seem to have the purpose of leading the humans against the cylons. But has Gaeta had as much of a major role as the others in this or is he more sinister?

Moreover is the last supper photo released a clue or just the cast having a bit of fun? Positionally Peter is missing from the BSG Last Supper Photo, but then again Peter holds the knife in the original last supper and Chief is the one holding the knife in this picture. So which disciple is missing from the picture?

I’ll admit I hadn’t thought of Gaeta either, until starting to read this thread. It is a pretty strong argument, but I don’t know. I do think he’s more likely than Zarek, in which case it comes down to just how subtle are you willing to believe the writers are being about this.

I’m finding it interesting that, again, it looks like Sam is the one of the secret Cylons most "grounded" in who he is — unless I misread the teaser for the next episode, he’s the one who turns the mutiny in Starbuck’s favor. He hasn’t had his central faith shaken the way the other Cylons have (and gods know there’s been reason to lose faith in Starbuck on that mission). Even Leoben didn’t seem to get to him the way he gets to other people. And I notice Leoben stopped trying to play mind games with him. Perhaps sensing his Cylonness like the Raider did before? (That’s probably a stretch though)

Sam’s going to be pivotal. The other three are adrift, perhaps because whatever stabilizing influence they need has come from him after all, and he’s absent. Very interesting.

Afterthought: What if it were to turn out the missing secret Cylon was killed earlier in the series?

Tom Zarek scores higher than Gaeta as the potential "fifth cylon" for several reasons, both within and beyond the show’s storyline.

The actor who plays Zarek, Richard Hatch, is a relatively "big deal" within the production realm of the show, having played Apollo in the original series, as well as working on a film adaptation called ‘Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming’ and a second continuity comic called ‘Battlestar Galactica: Zarek 1′ about the character’s early life as some kind of pirate. This isn’t definitive, but it does increase the liklihood that he’ll continue to be featured in an important way in future episodes.

Not only that, but it would be consistent with the use of an actor who played a former protagonist, newly cast as a "shady guy" like Zarek if he turns out to be a Cylon.

Within the story itself, there are 4 characteristics that all of the final five share that is absolute, something that Gaeta doesn’t display: they all share the same uncanny knack for "genius" in order to a.) survive, b.) better serve their own interests, c.) gravite to characters of influence within the fleet (and perpetually charm, seduce, bargain-with, or otherwise ingratiate themselves on those individuals — in other words, "to ensure their investments"), and finally d.) to espouse and remain fixated on collectivist philosophies and political positions (i.e., Tyrol and his labor agitating before and during new Caprica, Anders collecting and organizing resistance on both Capricas, etc).

In the episode ‘Colonial Day’ Zarek talks to the press about his collectivist political ideologies. All Cylons espouse collectivist sentiments and ideologies, even to the point of absurdity or non-sequitor, managing to always end up in leadership/valued positions within any group they pass through.

Another major characteristic is one of centrality to the plot: compared to Gaeta, what has Zarek done to help move the plot along at key points, and never fall into the backdrop of events (the way Gaeta has done since the beginning)? Who is more ubiquitous, Gaeta or Zarek? Who is more pwerful, and therefore capable of being a useful tool for creating the "cliffhanger" effect with his position in major events, Gaeta or Zarek?

Tom Zarek is ubiquitous and has never diminished from his role as a central character. Despite fewer appearances throughout the series, he sometimes seems to out-perform even Baltar in this capacity for self-interested behavior and being in critical positions at major plot turns.

This obsession with self-preservation would also explain why Zarek didn’t just wander around until he found the other "final five", who all shared a common history as allies, and could be plausibly seen together without raising suspicion. Zarek would naturally keep a low-profile if he realized he was a Cylon, since hanging out with people who he has never been officially allied with would arouse suspicion, and he would realize this being as shrewd and secretive as he’s always been.

Zarek is the ultimate machiavellian, has connections to all players within the fleet, even the criminal underground, while staying powerful in mainstream politics no matter how the circumstances change. His only true ally is himself, and his self-interest regularly eclipses his temporary associations because he never loses sight of his strategic position. All of the current "four" also make similar pragmatic alliances, like Zarek, but unlike the four that are known, Zarek has never been considered a friend of the Galactica crew like the other four, and has always been more of a "dark horse".

For this reason I can see him making an ideal "alpha Cylon" within the final five, or fulfilling countless other roles once his identity is revealed. Nominating Lee to the chorum might also turn out to be part of a ploy to gain legitimate access to the Galactica, so he can pursue his urges to meet up and contact the others.

Zarek has a history of single-handedly rallying almost anyone to whatever cause he needs to weave around himself, whether its prisoners on a transport ship, members of the hoi polloi in the chorum, officers on the Pegasus, or gangsters in the black market — just like all other Cylons, he’s charismatic in one way or another, and can talk himself into positions of trust and authority.

Zarek appears in a ‘Deus ex machina’ fashion when least expected: he went to Cobol, and was kept outside with Tyrol when the star-map to earth was seen in the tomb of Athena; he helped free and harbor Roslyn; he leaves bread-crumbs for Lee Adama to the prometheus gangsters, and yet, is seen associating with them after claiming not to have connections there; he helped Baltar during the election and ditches him once they’re on New Caprica; he was sentenced to death for resisting the Cylons, and wasn’t a major part of the resistance, but managed to keep tabs on all its leaders enough to organize them into an execution squad once they were off the planet; he starts the execution squads but ditches the burden on Rosyln at a key point and simultaneously buys his way into her office as VP; he was a political activist/terrorist fighting for collectivist ideologies on Saggitaron before the Cylon wars, and for all purposes, has continued to build and manage his own kind of shadow government within the fleet since he was liberated from the prison ship in the early days of the show.

Zarek has remained a constant threat and potential ally at the same time, a powerful and dynamic character on the show. Gaeta is only ever a supporting feature of things, adding texture but rarely substance, unlike the other characters recently revealed to be cylons. Gaeta, if he turned out to be a Cylon, would be quite a surprise given that he would be the ONLY Cylon lacking in "strong-willed" personality traits; he is the ultimate "follower" out of all the characters on the show, and perhaps even one of the most naive among the crew — definitely not typical Cylon qualities.

My biggest question to the "Gaeta for number five" crowd is this: of what value is Gaeta to the plot up to this point, and from this point on? If the VP of the fleet turned out to be a Cylon, especially one as ominous and unpredictable as Zarek, it would create suspense and doubt about the future of the fleet. The same can’t be said about Gaeta, who could live or die without affecting the fate of anyone.

Sounds harsh, but someone tell me I’m wrong on this last point; I just don’t see Gaeta being a valuable tool to the writers or the story progression as a Cylon, especially after all this suspense about the last one’s identity — I can just hear the moans of "WTF?" if it turns out to be him — where’s the "thrill" if Gaeta is a Cylon?

p.s. [EDIT]

Also, The first thing that lead me to suspect Zarek as the final "fifth" was the "easter egg" I found in the BSG wiki about him: his prisoner ID number on the prison transport when he was first introduced in the series, is an unusual number: 893893.

Zarek’s repetitive prisoner number, is a multiple of 47: 893893 = 893 * 1001 = 19 * 47 * 1001.

Why is this worth mention? Because the number has its own entry in the Wiki, under the heading "Numerology", which made me curious enough to investigate.

Being a computer scientist with a background in mathematics, I recognized the numbers 47 and 1001 from Buckminster Fuller’s "Synergetics", in which he referred to "palindromic numbers", or Scheherezade numbers. A palindromic number is a ‘symmetrical’ number like 16461, that remains the same when its digits are reversed. The term palindromic is derived from palindrome, which refers to a word like rotor that remains unchanged under reversal of its letters.

Here’s a quote from B. Fuller’s work ‘Synergetics’:

"The first prime number beyond the trigonometric limit is 47. The number 47 may be a flying increment to fill allspace, to fill out the eight triangular facets of the non-allspace-filling vector equilibrium to form the allspace-filling first nuclear cube. If 47 as a factor produces a Scheherazade Number with mirrors, it may account not only for all the specks of dust in the Universe but for all the changes of cosmic restlessness, accounting the convergent-divergent next event, which unbalances the even and rational whole numbers. If 47 as a factor does not produce a Scheherazade Number with mirrors, it may explain that there can be no recurring limit symmetries. It may be that 47 is the cosmic random element, the agent of infinite change."

But that’s not why this is an “easter egg”… its because the number 47 is a major “inside joke”:

* This is the last lottery number held by a lucky refugee on Caprica, who is rescued by Lt. Sharon Valerii during an emergency stop on the colony during the initial Cylon Attack. Dr. Gaius Baltar appears to momentarily consider using the number for himself as the older woman could not read her number (her forgetfulness leads her to neglect her glasses on top of her head). But Baltar is frightened out of the idea when Karl Agathon recognizes him, and Baltar fears arrest for treason.

* Sharon Valerii, as her stint as Boomer, the Raptor pilot, flies 47 missions in her Raptor (Flight of the Phoenix).

* The fighter tail number of Raymond Lai’s old Mark II Viper, later piloted by Kara Thrace, is number 8547 (Miniseries).

The number 47 was a very common in-joke on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Writer Joe Menosky, a Pomoma College alumni, originated this joke based on a humorous “47 Society” at the college. He and other writers placed the number as many times as possible throughout the series in technobabble, props, and visual references. The TV spy drama Alias took the “47″ joke to almost-epic proportions by placing very obvious references to the number in most of its episodes over its 5-year run.

The “47″ joke has become the numerical counterpart to the audio clip known as the “Wilhelm Scream” that’s added to many, many movies as an in-joke between directors and sound editors since the early 1950s. Recent movies that use the Scream include Ratatouille and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

So there’s "numerology" as the BSG wiki heading, Zarek’s prisoner number, and the quote "agent of infinite change" — sounds like something one of the hybrids said in the episode "Six of One," that "transformation is the goal".

Cool little mystery I’m still working on, thought I’d add that to my original post. Fun puzzle to try to solve, love this show. ;p
