Is Al Capone buried in a Catholic cemetery? Yep. Was he a good Catholic? Not by any stretch of the imagination.
However the mosque made a prudent decision, and one that has been noticed and hopefully appreciated. People who aren’t in the area can’t appreciate how hard this cop killing has hit the community. Philly has had several cop killings in the past few years and there is a sense that things have gotten out of control.
The city pols and community "leaders" that have taken over since Rendell left office and police chief John Timoney fled the backstabbing by those pols to Miami seem completely clueless how to fight back. Morale is low in the police force, and I’m starting to see the return of the siege mentality that was prevalent in big cities during the 1970s.
In short it’s not a good time to mess with the cops in Philly. The Germantown mosque recognizes this and did the right thing – even if it strikes some outsiders as the wrong decision.
You brought tears in my eyes knowing the unfettered purity of the Islam mosque in Phillie wouldn’t stoop so low as to bury a common thug-killer-bank robber believer killed by police gunfire.Â
Where do we sign up ?
On the other hand, Al Capone’s life as such was over when they sent him to Alcatraz following which he would latter die of dementia and other stuff like tertiary neurosyphilis after he got out of jail early due to good behavior. Â
Incidentally, in the Catholic faith, one of the corporal works of mercy is to actually bury the dead. It seems a merciful function provided for family members and others.  Who knows, even the dead gain by being disposed of.

It takes a big man to cry.
It takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
It has nothing to do with purity; the general consensus at Ali’s site is that the thug deserves a Muslim burial for roughly the same reason you point out for Capone.
The difference is that this is Philly, and things are tense here. This isn’t the time to be politically or religiously correct.
