Hurricane Clinton Strikes DNC?

A story on ABC has details on squabbling with the Democratic National Committee. Although, frankly, while the headline is funny, it’s probably too bombastic.

There is a line of thought on political candidates which says that anyone who wants the job of President of the United States is probably not fit to serve in that capacity. I used to think that was a profound observation, but now I’m not so sure. If you’re not willing to fight hard (in every legal and ethical way) for the most important job in the world, why on Earth should you have it?

I think it speaks well of Senator Clinton that she’s not backing down. I also think that, whatever disagreements I have with Senator Obama, it speaks well of him that he is firm and unapologetic in standing his own ground. And frankly, both candidates should be proud at how civil they’ve been in this historically unusual situation. As far as nasty, negative campaigns go, this doesn’t even reach 0.1 on the Richter scale.

What would be shameful is if, after the dust settles and a final decision is reached, the loser (who will probably be Senator Clinton but could still plausibly be Senator Obama) pouts and throws a tantrum. I somehow don’t see that happening.

If they followed the rules as written the penalty for Florida and Michigan would would be to lose half their delegates not all of their delegates.

Of course if they followed the rules Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina would also lose half their delegates as they moved their primaries ahead of the designated dates specified by the rules.

The way I see it they should just grant Florida and Michigan a waiver as they did for Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. At most this would allow Hillary to gain 100 delegates. (this is under the assumption that did not receive any of the uncommitted delegates)

Obama would still have a 100 delegate lead and Hilliary would no longer be able to claim this as an excuse to stay in the running until the convention.
