And hey, if you’re ever in DTW for a layover of an hour or more, give me a call dude. I live, literally, only a couple of miles from it. I could plausibly even walk there although I wouldn’t. ;-) Five minute drive. We’ll get a burger or something.
In the modern security era, Dean, that means the traveler leaving security and then going back. It’s a hassle. I’m sure it can be done, but I’ve never tried.
dean, that reminds me, g-chat me your cell phone number. our layover was 8 hours. however, we had family in canton so we were obligated to go hang out with them. I would have called you though had I had your number handy.
yeah, we did have to leave security, but since we had the kids, security was friendlier, and also more anxious to get rid of us :) though not always. in general once i am free of my checked luggage i am much more mellow, and not averse to popping outside the security zone. however I will say that on a layover through Kansas City, a whie back, i was very frustrated by the fact that you have to exit and reenter security even for catching a connection. It was the most annoying, aggravating possible design for an airport ever. I will never fly thru Kansas City again if I can avoid it.
I first saw a fountain like that in the early 1990s in Atlanta. Actually, several places in the city had them, it was like the city had received a bulk discount. Scott’s totally right that static photographs just don’t get it across.
the first of this type i ever saw was at Epcot, actually – at the gardens to the Imaginarium. theyu are still there, we took our (then) 3yr old to orlando and she had the same reaction i did. "I must catch it!"

Cool, they almost look like metal rods.

I love that fountain but no photograph can do it justice. The fountain shoots streams of water that make it look like it’s firing glass rods.
