“I enjoy watching reruns of Saturday Night Live and counting all the dead people” – George Carlin

Now he’s one of them. RIP Mr. Carlin.

On that note…

Open thread!

I think we’re gonna switch to a single weekend open thread rather than two different ones on Friday and Saturday, the popularity of them has obviously waned (probably partly due to the switch to new software, but probably also due to summer).

Everything’s slow right now. I vote for open thread on Saturday.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking.

I agree wholeheartedly with Nick who says that buying foreign made clothing is not unpatriotic.

This is strange one, a cyclist going 45 mph hits bear.

Too bad we can’t get a live chat thing going on for a while during the weekend.

Chad,

I have my own IRC chat channel that was originally set up for my forum, but doesn’t get any use. You are all welcome to meet there anytime you want. It is free through a friend, but I could loose it through inactivity.

Registering on the channel isn’t mandotory, but recommended. The IRC information you need is below.

IRC Server: irc.fr3d.org
Default Port: 6667
Join Channel: #VistaNews

Or if you do not want to use an IRC client like mirc you can get their via your browser through a java applet at this URL:

http://vistaoncurrentevents.com/irc/index.php

I’m there occasionally but most of the time only my channel bot (automated channel cop) "Bear" is around.

Most people can’t figure out IRC. Hell, I’ve been doing computers and chat for decades and I find IRC maddeningly frustrating. But if someone had a simple, easy blog chat thing we could use that was also elegant, we might be able to add it.

Dean, it’s true that many, if not most, don’t understand the commands enough to use an IRC client, which is why I supplied the browser link above as well. My script file does the setup and logs them in on the proper channel as "Anonymous."

The only command anyone has to know is setting their name once there,  i.e. "/nick Dean" (without the quotes). If perchance someone on the server in another channel has that name registered and your prompted for the password, use a variation of the name, or add a number to it.

You know, earlier this year I was on a site that had a private chat applet loaded somehow.  Let me see if I can find it.
It was just embedded in a normal post and the chat room ran for a few hours.
