Ooops.

Pardon me for misremembering Day’s role. I remembered him being in that ad, and his general anger at Kerry (just like every other Vietnam vet I know), but I should have realized he couldn’t actually have been a member of the Swift Boat Vets for Truth because, duh, he wasn’t even in the Navy. He was just a supporter of the POWs for Truth, a related group.

Most of my other comments stand though.

Mr. Esmay,

Perhaps there’s a bit more going on here than meets the eye…and I’m somewhat surprised that you don’t appear to have your finger on this particular pulse.

While it is correct that Col. Day was not a member "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth", he was, most assuredly, a member of "Swift Vets and POWs for Truth" after the consolidation of their respective organizations.  Now, at this point you could relegate this to "kerfuffle" status and move on along, but there’s some interesting "hair-splitting’" afoot at the now-updated "Powerline" commentary that appears (at least at this point) to be emanating from Col. Day himself, in the person of his biographer, Robert Coram.

Ostensibly this commenced with Greyhawk of "Mudville Gazette" taking umbrage with CNN and their limited descriptive of Col. Day as simply a member of the "Swift Boat Vets".  OK…good point by "Greyhawk" and appropriate laurels bestowed by the blogosphere.

Case closed? Apparently not.

Col. Day biographer Robert Coram has now entered the fray challenging the assertion that Col. Day was ever a member of "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" (with no mention of Col. Day’s indisputable association with "Swift Vets and POWs for Truth").  Technically correct is Mr. Coram…but why split that particular hair and what might that portend?

The answer appears to be obvious.  McCain’s embrace of his POW comrade is, apparently, giving considerable heartburn to elements within his own campaign and Day’s perceived "liabilities" need to be mitigated…somehow.  If Mr. Coram’s "hair-splitting" is the best they can come up with…well…I’d suggest that it’s back to the drawing board with that particular ploy.
