And let us not forget that wonderful Detroit tradition, Devil's Night and its history of arsons. While there were flaws in the Archer administration, I give them credit for this: they spent both police overtime and community outreach efforts to support people saying No to riots and arson and Yes to healthier celebrations. They changed attitudes. And while the Kilpatrick administration is likely rotten from the top, they've maintained and built on these policies. There's a lot still wrong with Detroit, but the city can take pride in this. You might recall that Jimmy Kimmell got in trouble for joking about the potential for new riots when Detroit was in playoff contention. Detroiters put that behind them, and they want people to know that. Detroit’s are, thankfully, a thing of the past, 80s and early 90s as I recall; but they were very real, and ugly. I think of the LA ones because at least a few of them have been particularly violent, with police cars set ablaze and suchlike.
