As long as it's not this kind of conversation (http://youtube.com/watch?v=DLvIFRNbqOs), then I think it's quite natural, normal, and healthy.Â

My 3 yr old has long, funny sounding conversations with himself. He sings to himself too. My wife and I love just standing out of sight and listening to him talk, explore and just comment on what he is seeing. Makes the whole world seem new again.

Hrrmmm...

Makes me wonder if doing away with the "Blab Schools" in the 1800's was a bad idea. They basically did just that, made the kids talk out their answers. In fact they got in trouble for being quiet. :)

Dean, rest easy....I not only have conversations with myself, but a close friend once told me I was the only person he knew who could have arguments with herself!

While I also talk to myself, I'm curious about the breakdown of the result. The writeup says:

78 percent of the children performed either the same or better on the performance task when speaking to themselves than when they were silent.
but I didn't see any other percentages.

So we know that 22% did worse, x% did better, y% were unaffected and x + y = 78.

If we assume that like most things in life, for most kids it made no difference, then let's assign a y = 50%, which makes x% = 28%. In this case, private speech helps 28% but hurts 22% - a result I would interpret as "generally doesn't hurt or help". However, it may be the case that it does help, such that x = 45%, y = 23% and 22% did worse.

jodyneel's last blog post..Banking world turned upside down

The problem with talking to yourself is that half the time you know what you're gonna say next.
