There’s a recall being attempted against California’s Governor Schwartzenegger. Story here.
I’m not sure why this is news though; recall efforts are not particularly uncommon in states which allow them. What’s uncommon is for such efforts to succeed. Although anything can happen in California.

I doubt it’ll work, although CA is a mess politically. The problem (from my rather non-leftish perspective) is that bureaucrat unions and government careerists have captured the state government, and keep trying to grow it beyond all proportion. Term limits may have actually made this worse by making the Legislature a stepping-stone position for these people and not a career by itself.
It doesn’t help that a combination of public initiatives and such carve up the state budget in inflexible ways (ie, X% for this, Y% for that).Â
But, as much as it pains me to admit it, CA’s tax system is ultimately to blame. Property taxes are too low and income and sales taxes too high, leading to boom&bust tax collection cycles, with tons of revenue – and government growth – in good times and revenue crashes in bad times.

If they succeed, the eternal question will be:Â
Was Arnold ever really the governor, or was that something we just imagined?
One of the reasons this is news is because of the Budget impasse in California.
Of course, it hasn’t helped in that the Democrat Budget chair of the California Assembly was caught by reporters while attending the Democrat convention in late August.
To date, its obviously all the Governator’s fault, except:
California’s fiscal crisis and budget mess are a replay of the challenges that led to the 2003 recall of then-Gov. Gray Davis and the election of Schwarzenegger. A few months before the recall election, the state had set a new record for a late budget, 67 days, when Davis signed the spending plan Sept. 5. T
This year, Schwarzenegger has yet to broker a deal with the Democratic-controlled Legislature. On Monday, a Republican budget was debated on the floor of the state Senate, but the measure failed by a 21-13 vote , when no Democrat voted for the plan as of 09-09-2008.
Yes, Arnold actually is the Governor.
Perhaps someone ought to tell the Assembly and the State Senate.
I doubt Ah-nuld is losing sleep over the recall attempt. The Field Poll has him at 40% approval ratings–but the state legislature is at 15%.
