First!

Wow….I do not know what to say.

2 Martin L. Shoemaker September 26, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Shameless plug time. My new web comic, Ulterior Motive Lounge, is now open. It’s a mix of geek education (look at the initials if you need a hint) and bad 80s movies. Three episodes so far:

Episode 1: Friday Night in Ulterior Motive Lounge

Episode 2: Who Ya Gonna Call?

Episode 3: Pestbusters II

Dean, I’m trying to dig out and catch up this weekend. Look for email or a call. Looking at late October, early November to pursue a class in SE MI.

Why have so many people recently begun dealing with gluten and dairy issues?  It seems everywhere I turn on-line or in life.

Has wheat and milk gotten worse?  Have we become ultra-sensitive?

Been following lots of Bane links and keep running into folks that can’t tolerate gluten or dairy.

Answers anyone?

4 Martin L. Shoemaker September 26, 2008 at 7:45 pm

annie1958, I have no answers, but can identify the possible answers:

1. Wheat and milk have gotten worse. I doubt it, but…

2. We now have better diagnostics for conditions that were always in the population but previously unexplained.

3. We now have better health overall. In earlier eras, these people died off too soon to be common, but now live long enough to be common. I doubt it, but…

4. These diagnoses are fads, and doctors and patients are following the fads. I haven’t heard this in this particular case, but it has been alleged for other conditions.

5. We’re getting weaker as a species.

My bet’s on #2.

My bet is 2 and 3. I would also put in a subset of those which is: we know to look now, which is sorta 4 but not really.

Barack Obama hates the Second Amendment, and he isn’t a big fan of the First, either.

My thought for the day…

There’s a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_swan_theory in the last room at the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilbert_Hotel.

8 Dishman September 26, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Bah, that came out wrong.  It should be…

I’m watching this week’s ‘Supernatural’ episode, and they’re arguing about what it says about God if he exists and isn’t helping in the fight against evil.  The character making the argument is called Dean.  It’s kind of funny.

Sit right down and prepare yourself to be Obama rolled!

For anyone who didn’t watch the debate, well, you made a good decision.

It was horrible.

They both sucked more than I thought humanly possible.

Sigh…..

12 John_B September 26, 2008 at 11:13 pm

I think the debate was a draw and they both drew failing grades.

Both were too busy trying to jam as many buzzwords as possible into every sentence. The result was nothing but buzz and no real content.

And annie,

I support Martin’s theories  2, 3, and 4.

And I’ll add theorum #6:  Our recent (20 years or so) ingrediant reporting requirements contribute to awareness as well.

14 jrogge September 26, 2008 at 11:50 pm

Hmmm the debate was certainly good for a couple of chuckles. Other than trying to interject the common "catch phrases" they both sounded like reasonable human beings. This is of course compared to the 2004 debates where it was a guy that couldn’t speak vs. a guy that shouldn’t speak.

The second debate is usually more interesting IMO. Only because after seeing the influx of opinions the media pumps out, the politicians try to direct the debate on to their strong points and you see more manuvering.

15 Ms.Janelle September 27, 2008 at 12:06 am

I agree with, JRogge.  They were both reasonable human beings.

I do think there should be preconditions when talking to rogue dictators.  What gets to me is the idiot from Iran was on Larry King!  He was being interviewed like a Miss America.  I could not ever remember a time in history that we allowed this! The terrorist, is running around New York!  To me, that is bad, very, very bad.  I feel like he is looking for ways to attack New York.  So aren’t we letting him around with no preconditions?  Do we have, FBI and some kind of tight security around him? It may be that we do but he shouldn’t be allowed here.  McCain did make a remark about that and I was glad he did.  I just watched a few minutes of Larry King and was terribly mad.

Here is something else that makes me mad.  Let’s just tell our enemies (Obama) when we want to move out of Iraq.  I have had my dear father on my mind the past few months and just wonder what he would be thinking is happening with the news, main stream news saying terrible things about our President when we have a war going on.  Some idiot on CNN, Paul Something said everybody considers Bush a moran.  What is going on?  I get so upset.

16 jrogge September 27, 2008 at 12:12 am

Well the thing here is we have already had a publicly announced 2011 date that may or may not actually manifest into reality. We’ve broadcast our intentions all over the place for years now.

The question is, when we do this and still succeed, does that make us more fearsome?

17 TexasAg03 September 27, 2008 at 12:38 am

Something interesting.WHEW!  Now you won’t kill me.

18 Ms.Janelle September 27, 2008 at 12:41 am

JRogge,

Yes, we do have 2011 announced.  I guess we have to do that so Iraq will get all their ducks in a row.  I believe we have met all our benchmarks.  You are right, 2011 is a date that may or may not actually manifest into reality.

I still don’t understand at all why the terrorist can walk around New York.  He is supplying terroist withweapons and a lot more to the enemy still in Iraq.  It just goes beyond my understanding.  Maybe somebody knows why.  I am dumb founded!

19 Ms.Janelle September 27, 2008 at 12:49 am

• Pakistan warns U.S. to stay out territory while hunting militants
• Iran escapes new sanctions in next U.N. resolution

This just came in on Yahoo News.  I do feel McCain won the debate.  He warned about Pakistan, Obama got his views wrong and McCain came in and told him, us, why.

Iran escapes new sanctions…..?  Tells me we need McCain.

Why is the terroist idiot roaming New York?

20 Ms.Janelle September 27, 2008 at 1:05 am

CBNNews.com – ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Pakistan warned U.S. troops not to intrude on its territory Friday, after the two anti-terror allies traded fire along the volatile border with Afghanistan.

There again, what did McCain say verses Obama.  McCain, knows what he is talking about.

Guess I do say McCain did better regarding foreign policy.  Obama did well on the economy.  I do think once the deal in Washington is sealed, MCain will be proven that he did think of Country First, and went there suspending his campaign.  After the debates, he flew back to Washington.  I really respect him for taking this chance.

I don’t know if I wrote anything interesting, Dean :-)  I’ll go lay down I ‘spose:-)

The cause of our  house of cards economic crisis.

The first half I think is a pretty accurate rendition of how we got into our present economic mess with housing. The last half is more political, so you decide.

I’m watching the new, "Huckabee Show",on Fox.  It is pretty good.

I’m resting after a full day of packing and my joints and bones……UUGH.  I’ll go take a nice warm bath in a bit and try to get to bet early.

There are some great links here ;-)

Say something interesting, or I’ll kill you

So that’s the way it is now, eh?

Okay, looks like Fortis, a Ginormous European Bank is likely to go bust on Monday. This will badly affect financial markets world-wide, and the legislation currently being hashed out in Washington DC will have absolutely no affect on it.

Hello, 1929. So nice to see you again… NOT.

27 cardeblu September 27, 2008 at 11:30 pm

I wonder how the former WaMu "Rodeo Grandmas" feel now.  As a personal and business customer of WaMu AND having 13 years left of a 15-year fixed mortgage with Countrywide……I’m not panicking.  They told me not to, so I’m not–yet.  Should I be?

28 Sandi September 28, 2008 at 12:08 am

Hmm… Look who else is getting bailed out while Congress has us preoccupied with Fannie and Freddie.

29 JLBussey September 28, 2008 at 12:23 am

Great video, Dean!

Just back from vacation in Colorado.  Took a ton of photos.  Got a few up already, but it’s going to take a while to get through them all…

As for gluten stuff, another one like this is severe peanut allergies.  My (Chinese) wife has never heard of such a thing.  I pointed out that Chinese babies with this allergy likely die quickly – and mysteriously – as many Chinese dishes use peanuts, including many that babies eat.  If this tendency is  genetic, it’s quickly out of the gene pool.

After thinking a bit, she agreed.

I saw that Supernatural too.  I think I’m going to add that show to my DVR list.  I’ve enjoyed it off and on.  Now that it’s taking on biblical themes, I’m intensely interested in what they do and how the theme affects the characters.

Of particular interest this past week was Castiel noting that angels are the "warriors of God."  We sometimes forget about that.

Additionally, TWOP noted that "Castiel" is an "Angel of Thursday."  These jokes are sometimes a little too obscure for their own good.

Worst post debate "talking point" -

‘John McCain didn’t mention the middle class once.’

I STG – the talking heads threw that phrase in everywhere they could regardless of the subject.
