Time was, in the days when I used to watch ER (haven’t seen it since Noah Wyle left) any storyline on domestic violence would be accompanied by a more or less obvious sermon on the need for ever-more stringent laws to “protect†women. This same theme dominated on any major TV drama.
Last nite’s Raising the Bar featured a discussion among lawyers as to whether the laws were appropriate, or simply paternalism, as they presume women are unable to make their own choices. This particular story line featured a woman deemed a victim, after her husband threw a coffee cup at her, and her resistance to law enforcement intervention.
Not only was it refreshing to see another point of view, this also suggested to me there may be changes a’comin… when an idea hits national TV, this tells me more than few people are thinking about the status quo.
Those changes can’t come too soon for me.
