“Get In Their Faces”

by Dave Price on October 23, 2008

in Politics

Looks like some Obama supporters took his instructions way too literally.

Of course, it’s Drudge, so it’s only probably true at this point.  But if an Obama supporter really did mutilate a 20-year-old girl who was a McCain supporter by carving a “B” into her face… well, the “craziest party” sweepstakes would pretty much be over, right?

UPDATE:  Confirmed.

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.

UPDATE:  TMZ claims there is skepticism.

She’d have to be pretty crazy to do this to herself, but some people are.

UPDATE:  Police are reportedly saying “hoax” now.

Yeah, to me it sounds a bit more like your average street thug on drugs who just needed a reason, any reason, to get violent.  I’m going with that until it’s confirmed that political leanings directly lead to the violence.

Is political affiliation covered by "hate crimes" laws?

3 Elisha Feger October 23, 2008 at 5:16 pm

Only if the victim is a democrat, TexasAg03.

OK, well it is something to think about.  I don’t know if I’d say the Obama campaign was entirely responsible; there’s that whole angry, stupid, young street thug factor still out there.  However, I do think Obama should come out and admit that this incident proves (among other incidents) that his "get in their faces" comment was a completely boneheaded thing to say.

Of course, Obama’s rabid followers *are* made up of a lot of angry stupid young thugs.

Malkin is saying this doesn’t smell right.

6 jaymaster October 23, 2008 at 7:30 pm

It doesn’t smell right to me either.

Especially considering that the "B" looks like a mirror image of a real "B".

7 Scott October 23, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Well, the thing that doesn’t "smell right" is that she refused medical treatment.  If I’d been attacked I’d want treatment both to ensure I was OK and to help find the bad guy to put him in prison and make him pay my medical bills.

8 jaymaster October 23, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Well,  now it just donned on me that if the guy was standing above her head, looking down, the form of the “B” would make sense.

9 Dave Price October 23, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Well, the thing that doesn’t "smell right" is that she refused medical treatment.

I don’t know, she wasn’t that badly hurt and she’s from out of town.  She may have just wanted to get back to her hotel room where she’d feel safe.

Still, there are some reasonble questions to be asked.

jaymaster: Glad you caught that possibility; I was about to point it out.

Insufficient evidence so far to say whether it was a true case of political hate or not just yet. Maybe more details will come in. The photos certainly show her messed up.

I first read about the report following a link to Drudge, who said she’d been ‘mutilated’. When I found out that she refused treatment, Drudge’s report sounded inaccurate.

From the picture, it looks like she was definitely injured. I don’t think the police have finished reviewing the tape yet, but no one can know what was going on until the evidence is in.

During the last election there were incidents like this. I think some Kerry supporter tried to run over two Republican women with his car. There were unfounded accusations too.

We have a habit of obsessing over our elections. The news and the blogs cover them 24/7 for more than a year.  I wonder if this (like most obsessions) drives some vulnerable people nuts.

My immediate reaction is that this is either a nutcase who wants publicity (if it is a hoax) or it is a nutcase who is already a criminal using whatever excuse necessary to get his charge for the day.

However, one thing that consistently bothers me about the Democrats is how comfortable they are with a huge majority of felons either being Democrats or voting for Democrats. Many Democrats openly support allowing felons to vote simply due to this disparity in support of felons for the Democrat party.

Frankly, I don’t think I would look at felons as a political voting bloc. There’s a reason we take their right to vote away, and the fact that they overwhelmingly support one party is something that certainly gives me pause for what it implies about that party’s policies, but even if they supported MY party, I don’t think I would want to give them their vote back just for that reason. Actually, I would take a serious look at my own platform to see why felons were so solidly  behind it. And I’d probably make some changes because of that.

Apparently she has now admitted to making the story up:

well, the “craziest party” sweepstakes would pretty much be over, right?

you were the only one interested in that sweepstakes. I was arguing from the start that there is no "craziest".

16 jrogge October 24, 2008 at 3:18 pm

See that’s why conservative protesters are better. They don’t hit other people. Instead they carve letters into their own faces and blame it on someone else. Kinda like how they treat the economy.

If the young woman has a history of mental illness, that’s really sad.  Drudge and others that jumped on this story out of desperation to try and find something to beat Obama back with have only ended up doing huge damage to this girl, who probably was only ever seeking attention from other local campaign volunteers.  Now she’s branded internationally as a hoaxer, which has to be devastating and far far out of proportion to anything she did wrong.

Campaigns should not be in the business of turning away eager volunteers because they have mental problems either, and I worry that this incident will make that more common.  In 2004, one of the nicest volunteers we had was a schizophrenic woman in her 30s who lived alone in a special apartment building with her cats, and tended to ramble on bizarre digressions.  We didn’t put her on the phones, but she was a tremendous help in making campaign materials and was close to staff and other volunteers.   I’d hate to see campaigns start treating such people as liabilities rather than treating them as people.

Man, people crack me up. It’s not as if some moonbats haven’t done the same thing on the Left. Tawana Brawley comes quickly off the top of my head.

The only thing worse than conservatives supposedly "jumping all over this to make Obama look bad" is liberals pretending that there aren’t plenty of examples of the same thing on the Left.

And as I recall, Tawana Brawley became a huge hero to the Left for months and months.

It’s fairly typical on the conservative side to debunk these things quickly instead of turning the person into a longtime martyr.

As I understand it, there are still plenty of liberals who bleieve the original Tawana Brawley story in spite of her own confession….

Also, I might point out that my own initial reaction (and I’m a pretty typical conservative) is that it was very likely a play for attention by the poor woman. And I wasn’t the only one, in fact the majority reaction on the right was probably as skeptical as my own.

I need a grammar refresher…
If we are only comparing Democrat to Republican, isn’t it impossible for one to be "craziest"? Doesn’t it have to be "crazier?"

I didn’t say that there weren’t examples on the left.   But lets not play ring around the bullshit here.  This story got blown up into major coverage because the right is casting around frantically for a big scandal that can cut into Obama’s poll numbers.  And they ran hard with a story that looks like it was always shaky to begin with. The end.

If you were skeptical, good for you. Malkin as well. But then again, whether you ever believed it or not, you and others certainly found it a great excuse to go off on tangents about how Democrats love felons and violent black thugs. The ultimate truth or falsehood of the story doesn’t matter when its all just an excuse to push those emotionalized themes some more.

21 redux46 October 24, 2008 at 4:55 pm

And of course she said the robber was black.

Real nice.

22 Brian Tiemann October 24, 2008 at 5:33 pm

When I first read this story I got the impression that there were witnesses—that the “attack” had occurred in a public place. I’m not sure how I got that idea, but it was what kept me from thinking it was fishy at the outset. (Really, who would accept a person’s story like that at face value, no pun intended?) But aside from that, yow, did it ever sound like something out of a bad movie.

Or an old South Park episode. Remember “Some Puerto Rican Guy”?

23 CosmicConservative October 24, 2008 at 5:48 pm

Bad:

I take great offense at your assertion that I inserted race into this at all.

As usual, every time race comes up, it comes from the Left.

Go figure.

Tawana Brawley staged a rape to avoid punishment from her parents. The case drew media attention. This person self-mutilated their face in order to try and make Obama supporters look foolish. Both are crazy, but beating yourself up to smear a political campaign is crazier.
