Seems they don’t do any credit card verification — unlike John McCain’s campaign. A few people have tested their donation software and found it accepts pretty much anything. This means that Obama’s supporters in Palestine, Iran, and Europe could have donated a hefty chunk of that $150M he raised last month, and another hefty chunk could have been donated in violation of contribution limits.
Ace optimistically hopes the media may pay attention to this, but I’m guessing they will only call for the prosecution of the people who tested the system with names like Adolf Hitler and John Galt.
Anyways, if ACORN can illegally register imaginary voters for Obama (using taxpayer dollars, no less!) I don’t see why the Obama campaign can’t illegally accept contributions from Mickey Mouse and company too.

When you need to feed the maw at over $100 million a month, you’ve got to get the money somehow.
If this gets properly investigated by the FEC, I could see his campaign ending up short by $100 million or more. That’s where the real trouble starts.
Certainly bears investigating, but all campaign donations ultimately go through a compliance department. If they get through that, then there’s a case here. If they get refunded within a couple of days, then not.

The compliance department didn’t catch Doodad Pro or Good Will,
If they catch these, it may be because they have specific names to look for, like Adolf Hitler.
Turning off AVS is a deliberate act. It appears that they intended to allow fraud.
There’s no record kept of how much they actually allowed.
At this point the FEC needs to freeze the Obama campaign’s funds until a full investigation can be complete. It may seem extreme but there is no other way to ensure a fair election at this point. And Obama and his campaigners did it to themselves.
For Obama or his campaign managers to make such a boneheaded illegal decision seems pretty unlikely to me, and I’m no fan of Barack Obama. The energy and enthusiasm for Obama seems pretty real, I don’t doubt that he has raised the vast majority of his money legally.
I’ve got other problems with Obama. Sure I’d love to see an investigation of this, and if a Republican were spending $200 million to win the White House we’d see all kinds of stories about "buying" the White House and how Obama will "repay" the money men who brought him the money (like we saw in 2000 and 2004 when Bush was setting records). But he’s NOT a Republican.
When it comes to investigations, either by the press or the authorities, there is one thing abundantly clear….
It’s good to be the Democrat.

CC, I think the evidence suggests that they did.
That doesn’t bode well for an Obama administration.
I suspect his supporters would be deeply disappointed if he won.
Dave:
I’m pretty sure there is NOTHING that is "too big for the media to ignore" when it comes to Obama’s election.
The press is so obviously in the tank for Obama that fully 70% of the public believe the media is rooting for an Obama victory.
Since the Republican "base" is far less than 50% of the public, it seems pretty obvious that most independents and probably half of Democrats see the media as in the tank for Obama.
As Glenn Reynolds says.
"That’s because it’s true."

Dishman:
Based on what I know of Obama’s actual policy desires, I think when he does win, within a few years a large fraction of his current supporters will be suffering from a very serious hangover and there will be a significant case of buyers remorse going on.
Especially in states like Colorado where an Obama Presidency will almost certainly bring about serious economic distress. Much of this state’s economy is based on "exploitation" of natural resources, and over half of the state is owned by the Federal Government. Obama’s plans to restrict access and reduce mining, drilling and logging are well documented. Even if he only gets half of what he wants implemented the economic consequences for most of Colorado will be dire indeed. If Colorado goes Obama, I predict serious backlash once Obama’s policies begin to seriously impact even the moonbats who live in Boulder or Denver who take their access to the state’s wealth of natural resources for granted.
But still, I can’t believe that Obama’s campaign could be so mind-numbingly obvious about engaging in actual fraud. It boggles the mind. Nobody could be that stupid and run a national campaign.
Could they?

Scott:
If the FEC froze Obama’s funds, the Left would go absolutely apeshit over the Bushitler’s fascist regime trying to steal the election for McCain. And with the press so in the tank for Obama, that’s ALL the public would hear.
The odds of such a thing happening are zero percent, and I only go that high because negative odds are in the realm of the imagination.

If something truly illegal is going on, and the authorities don’t do anything about it because of the fear of bad press, then maybe they shouldn’t have power at all.
jrogge:
You are vastly over-simplifying things.
The circumstances are far more complex and the stakes are far higher than just "fear of bad press."
Sometimes the explanation for a situation won’t fit on a bumper sticker.
