Record Turnout This Year?

Politico says that there was no record voter turnout this year, but, I’m not sure this analysis is entirely fair. The very fact that there were 6.5 million new registered voters with about 4 million more votes cast this year definitely indicates an increase of some sort.

I suspect that it also hides the fact that black voter turnout was up but turnout in other segments (probably among white Evangelicals) was down a bit. Overall it looks like around a 2-5% increase over 2004, which isn’t exactly massive but certainly is respectable.

Also, 2004 was a year of high turnout. So to have increased on that significantly is, well, significant. Unlike some, I’d say it’s all a sign that our politics are working pretty well, all things considered.
