What do the cities of Detroit, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Atlanta all have in common other than the fact that they’ve each asked Washington to bail them out?
Need a moment? Here, I’ll tell you:
Each city has a Democrat for mayor. Also, three of the four states have Democrats for governor – Georgia being the exception. However, it should be noted, that while Georgia elected a Republican for governor in 2003 a Republican hadn’t held the office since the 1870′s.
Simple coincidience, or further proof of failed Democratic economic policies? You decide.
Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention a few months back when I first heard about it. This year’s Census Bureau report on the poorest cities in the U.S. shows 9 of the top 10 all have Democrats for mayor. Miami’s mayor, the lone holdout, is an Independent that endorsed Obama for President.
The next couple of years should be interesting…

It’s a weak argument, Kevin.
New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago have not made similar requests. All have Democratic mayors. Two of three have Democratic governors. There are probably fifty other cities of over 250,000 population with Democratic mayors and Democratic governors that haven’t asked for bailouts, either.
The case is further weakened by the fact that most cities of over 250,000 population have Democratic mayors. If you’re saying that the larger the population of poor people, the more likely the city is to have problems then, yes, I agree with you. Which came first?
Yes… that’s right… the people in charge have no bearing whatsoever on the economic trends that occur to their constituency.
I mean, it’s not like we elect people to pass laws that effect the economy. Pfft! Perish the thought!
Your counterargument is nonexistent. It doesn’t matter who hasn’t asked for assistance, but who has. And who has are cities deeply entrenched with Democratic leadership. And the poorest cities are also deeply entrenched with Democratic leadership.
If that isn’t a fact worth looking closely at… I have to ask why does it matter who we elect to places of power?
So basically Kevin you are saying that this fairly weak correlation obviously implies causation?Â
