Somehow,

McK saw it all differently.

She didn't say "F* the Cubs" in reference to the players or the team itself.

She said, "Hold up the F*cking Cub Sh*t."

The reference in its primary nuance refers to the Tribune which wanted to sell the team to avoid bankruptcy. So while the Governor was on the phone using bad language, she was in the background saying to hold up that deal.

Quote:

"And she unleashed an obscenity-filled tirade suggesting Tribune Co. ownership should "just fire" Chicago Tribune editorial writers if the company wanted the state to help it unload Wrigley Field to ease its crushing debt.

I was just talking to a friend who's a bigger baseball fan than I am (I really don't follow the game much, I get a little interested around playoff times is all), and he said the Cubs looked like they were going to go all the way this year and were arguably the best team in the league. They just got creamed in the playoffs with a three-game losing streak and were out. This happens to good teams. Look what happened to New England in Football. Also back in the late '90s the Detroit Redwings had easily the best record in the entire National Hockey League, and choked all of a sudden in the playoffs. A year or two later they brought the Stanley Cup home, so the Cubs may have a good year next year.

The Cubs won their division title both this year and last year. But, the last time they won the pennant was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan (1945) and their last World Series win was exactly 100 years ago--1908. I am pretty sure they hold the undisputed title for "most frustrated fans in major league sports."

Having spent much of my life in Chicago, all of it on the South Side or in the South Suburbs, I've always been more of a Sox fan anyway (to whatever extent I'm a fan--the loyalty is as much tribal as anything). But I and a number of my friends from that area don't hate the Cubs (that seems to be a peculiar fashion only with some Cub fans hating the Sox or vice-versa), and would like to see them win.

Mostly, though, I was trying to make a joke. It's really true that politics in and around Chicago is so ubiquitously corrupt it barely passes notice unless there's a major embarrassment; the unwritten rule in Chicago seems to be, "you can be corrupt, just don't embarrass us." But diss the Cubbies? Them's fightin' words, son.
