Jesse Jackson Jr.’s Problems

I have no beef with Jesse Jackson, who is a political moderate of the pretty typical Chicago Democrat type–practical, sensible, reasonable. He would probably make an excellent replacement for Barack Obama’s Illinois Senate seat, as by all accounts he’s been a fine Representative.

Still, in reading this story in the Chicago Tribune, it struck me as odd just how weird his denials sound. Like, he’s not very good at this or something. All the evidence we have available is that Jackson offered to raise campaign funds for disgraced Governor Blagojevich. Why not just say that? That’s not illegal, it’s pretty normal behavior. His utterly denying he ever talked to the Governor about Obama’s Senate seat seems just bizarre.

Or, possibly the press is being unfair to him. If so I’m not quite able to see how though.
