As for what protection we had, I'd have to say time.  Time will erase the passions of those involved and allow for a dispassionate account of the real events.  You've said that history will remember Bush as a good President.  I agree with you.  But that means that time must pass until the real story is allowed to be accepted.  I think our grandchildren will get that story.
