I knew we’d be seeing it fairly soon, but I didn’t expect it to be so obvious even before the swearing in.
This and a bunch of cabinet picks (most of which I approve of, for the record) that the hard left despises, has got to be making many diehard Obama-ites very unhappy.
Once again, the man’s lack of experience has shown itself to be a strength; with no record of significant achievement or failure, there was nothing to vote for except his ability to convince you he was on your side during the election.

I wonder; even if he decides to write a letter stating that he is pained beyond belief that this family is calling off punch and pie on his account, would he be able to do it with a straight face?
If lefty supporters need consolation, they can look at it this way:
Obama has two sets of decisions to make: style and substance. He’s been making very centrist picks in his appointments, but at the end of the day these people will serve at his pleasure and will be duty-bound to implement his policies. The political stances of his appointements are largely a style issue (their administrative competence is not, but competence is not a partisan issue). It remains to be seen which direction Obama will go on his policy directives. It’s quite possible that he’s making centrist appointments to build political capital with moderates so that he can spend that capital to implement a progressive policy agenda.
The consolation in this scenario for moderates and conservatives is that he’s got a well-qualified team of mostly moderates in his cabinet who will likely try to talk him out of doing anything too stupid.

Hear, hear!
