Idiots. We are a nation who lets IDIOTS choose our leaders.

And this is what we get.

Heh, The Democrats said this for at least 8 years until this guy arrived. I guess fair is fair. Besides, if Obama is cut any slack now it will probably be very difficult to destroy him politically. You gotta wound the guy before he can start off running. It's the only way.

This is a great opportunity to do it too. It is easy to call Bill Richardson and oversight. Now, he has Geithner and Daeschle as poor choices. The guy needs to learn how get get trustworthy people to vet for him. He tried to do a good thing with his executive order calling for a higher ethical standard, but is doing a poor job on getting people that can help deliver that standard.

Considering that he hasn't had the 3 months time to think about these things at his Crawford Ranch and a Daddy that has cronies lined up to do certain jobs, what can you expect? Before you say things like IDIOTS choose our leaders you might want to think carefully about who you are calling an idiot. Like, say, 96% of Black voters, 2/3rds of hispanic voters, and 56% of female voters to name a few demographics. They're idiots? How about that fact that that same nation of "idiots" also elected Dubya for a second term? Oh... I see the nation was much smarter 4 years ago.

Chances are, like the last President before him he'll screw up. But, he appears to be at least making an attempt to keep his promises. Can he keep them? Right now it's impossible to tell. I believe history will vindicate him. :D

Dean:

I will call Obama's cabinet a "tax cheat haven" for as long as he has prominent tax cheats IN IT. You can make whatever excuse you want, I am quite capable of making my own judgments of people's intentions, and IN MY JUDGMENT it is downright LUDICROUS to suggest that Tom Daeschle and Tim Geithner did not KNOW they were defrauding the government.

Tom Daeschle helped WRITE THE DAMN TAX CODE, and to now say that he had no IDEA that he was supposed to pay taxes on a limosine and driver is INSANE. Tim Geithner IGNORED WRITTEN PROMISES to pay taxes, promises HE SIGNED UNDER PENALTY OF PERJURY.

It is hard to imagine two more clear cut examples of tax fraud. Yet you want to make it "off limits" to point out that Obama's cabinet is a haven for tax cheats.

That's what it is. It's not MY FAULT that Obama has nominated tax cheats for high office. But I'm not giving him, Daeschle or Geithner a pass on this.

And that's not even counting the recent revelations of tax fraud from his withdrawn nominee for "Chief Performance Officer" or the likely tax problems inherent in Bill Richardson's alleged "pay for play" scheme.

And it's not even restricted to Obama's cabinet. You also have Charles Rangel not paying tens of thousands of dollars in taxes on his shady real estate deals (among many other ethical problems) and Al Franken's multi-state tax evasion.

What else is out there? Who knows, but I do know this. If Republicans had half a dozen PROIMINENT NATIONAL FIGURES who had done the SAME THINGS as these Democrats, all you would hear 24/7 from the media is how corrupt the Republicans are.

Obama set himself up with his ridiculous platitudes and empty promises about "a new tone" and "the highest ethical standards" and "getting rid of the influence peddlars" and all that other touchy-feely crap that people actually BELIEVED and VOTED ON.

It's not a big deal to file amended returns if it was an honest mistake.  However, when you are using TurboTax and it warns you about something and you purposely bypass it, that is beyond a mistake.

Well, it certainly irks me, and I think it SHOULD be an issue that the R’s push.  Yes, it’s only mildly unethical. I had an accountant tell me that it’s always worth “cheating”, as long as it’s not too blatant. There’s a very low chance of ever getting caught (at least for a normal person, more on that later), since only maybe 5% of returns ever get audited (with maybe 1% random). And if it’s just an “oopsy” kind of “mistake”, you’re only liable for the tax plus interest and some pretty minor penalties.  So from a financial perspective, cheating is a good bet. Â

Still, morally and ethically, I think it’s wrong.  But I realize that’s a personal judgment, and YMMV…Â

But my biggest problems with these shenanigans stem from the hypocritical nature of these guys. First, they have hammered the R’s on borderline and sometimes even manufactured ethical issues for years.  And Pelosi and Obama both ran with this very  issue prominent in their campaigns, with promises to “drain the swamp” etc.  Meanwhile, it appears as if a large percentage of their own people were playing the same games. Â

And you’d think these guys would realize that when they’re playing in this environment, they’re going to have to face background checks.  Maybe they are so thick skulled that they can’t think that far ahead. Or maybe they’ve got the Blogoyavich/Spitzer mentality that they are just too smart or powerful to get caught.  Â

And then there is the whole “paying taxes is patriotic” and its the moral thing to do schtick.  High roller Dem’s have been telling us our taxes are too low for years.   Yet every chance they can save a dime in taxes, it seems most of them do. Â

One of the turning pints for me in choosing Bush over Kerry back in 2004 was when I saw their tax returns.  Kerry the billionaire used every tax shelter imaginable to lower his rate to 2%. While Bush the millionaire was paying 25% or so (I was around 22%). Â

On the one hand, I say bravo to Kerry for taking advantage of every opportunity he had to lower his taxes. But when he waves his finger in may face, and tells me I need to pay more, it rings a bit hollow. If he’s not willing to do it, why should I? It’s the same “do as I say, not as I do issue” that oozes from so many of these people.Â

So I hope these guys get pounded hard on this stuff.

For aesthetic reasons – simply to provide rhetorical balance – perhaps some fierce Republican purists should make a big deal out of it. Given a taste of their own medicine, perhaps Democrats who go overboard in their criticisms might be a little more careful next time. Or – maybe not.
