I’m surprised I beat Dave Price to this story.

So once again, Sadr, The Man Who Cannot Lose, has reached another milestone in his wildly popular schemes to throw out all foreigners, destroy the infant democracy (which Arabs and Muslims don’t really care about anyway), and turn Iraq into “An Islamic Republic in the Orbit of Iran(tm).”

Well, the poor showing of Sadr-backed candidates was mentioned in a couple pieces I linked, but with his party not even allowed to run and his militia crushed he’s really a bit player now.

Funny how the press was calling him The Most Powerful Man In Iraq just a year ago. In fact, he’s still prominent most of the results for that phrase in Google. Seldom do memes die so quickly.

Sadr was one of the few straws left for the defeatists to seize onto to justify their mantra of failure, failure, failure.

I suppose most of them really were sincere in their view that failure was unavoidable, and I do believe that the press, with its irresponsible and shallow way of covering war (not just this war, but modern war in general), probably made it all the easier for them to believe Iraq was an unmitigated disaster when there was copious evidence even in the worst, darkest days that there was every reason for hope. If the press doesn’t really cover the facts properly, how can those who depend on the press for their information come to reliable conclusions?
