Copyright As A Weapon

Patterico notices how CNN is using copyright to stifle criticism. This almost certainly should fall under “fair use” but individuals will tend to have less ability to wage such fights than corporations and government agencies would. This is going to be interesting to watch over the years.

Wikipedia faces a similar challenge, by the way; I’ve noticed an increasing number of cases where people who work in certain industries or professions can “camp out” on certain Wikipedia references and crush anyone who tries to improve the articles. There are some tools available to help that, but not many. Yes, a dedicated gadfly can win the day, but it winds up being a lot of work.

Thanks, Dean, for the link.

That “unavailable” message was really creepy.
