Support “Day by Day,” Make Friends and be Popular

Day by Day artist and scribe Chris Muir needs your support. Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more!

Last year’s donation event was suppose to keep things going for 16 months but, like everyone else, Chris has been hit by the economic downturn and 16 months became 12. Still, 12 months is quite the feat! Well, if you enjoy Chris’ political comic stylings (like me) then he and I both humbly ask that you dig into your money holder of choice and give what you can.

Better still than supporting a comic you love, even as little a $1 nets you some goodies! Head on over to Day by Day for all the details. The more you give, the more you get! Now that’s capitalism for you!

I’ve already made my donation. Now it’s your turn.

Kevin, weren’t you one of the people who expressed a dislike for Muir’s work earlier? I may be mistaken, that thread isnt on frontpage anymore.

at any rate I was somewhat pleased to see yesterday’s strip where for once the token liberal straw-woman manages to make an intelligent observation.

I criticized Chris’ work, yes. That doesn’t mean I don’t like it. I do think that he goes overboard sometimes with the skin. I don’t need to see Jan, Sam, or Skye a gentle breeze from naked every day.

But, for that matter, I don’t think Superman should be drawn like a bodybuilder either.

So, it’s artistic criticism, not criticism of the points he tries to make.

I think Chris reads Dean’s World. I wouldn’t be too surprised if he read that thread.

I won’t support him though.

Don’t see why you needed to tell us you won’t support him…

5 CosmicConservative July 15, 2009 at 7:33 pm

Don’t see why you needed to tell us you will…

6 Kevin D. July 15, 2009 at 8:05 pm

Because I’m trying to help Chris make a livelihood. And it would be kinda weird to ask you guys to give him money if I didn’t.

So, again, don’t see why you needed to tell us you won’t support him…

i personally find the Soros obsession distasteful. I mean, whats the implicit point? that Soros is an evil geniuus mastermind? What does that make Richard Mellon Scaife?

i know, DBD is red meat for the conservative boys. Soros = Bad Guy on all sorts of deep and primal levels. like Monsters Inc, “we Scare because We Care”

8 CosmicConservative July 15, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Again, I don’t see why you needed to tell us you do.

I also don’t see why you insist on making an issue of this. Are you expecting accolades for your public service in support of soft-porn cartoons?

9 CosmicConservative July 15, 2009 at 8:15 pm

My problem with Soros is that he is a galaxy-class hypocrite. The man made his fortune raiding the retirement funds of little old ladies. Now he lectures everyone on how they should live and funds all sorts of moonbat causes. It would be hard to find a more compelling example of a person who has abused capitalism to make his fortune on the backs of those less fortunate than him.

He’s a fairly despicable human being.

10 Kevin D. July 15, 2009 at 8:54 pm

I’m not trying to make an issue of it. I’m just wondering why you felt that we all needed to know you don’t want to support Chris. What was the compunction? I’m just curious.

And if you cannot understand why I said I did is because, again, I don’t want to ask people to support something I myself don’t support, well, then, I don’t know how else to explain it to you.

But at least I tried. You? Or are you expecting accolades for your public service in opposition of what you call soft-porn cartoons?

Well, this certainly interesting. I see nothing unusual at all about someone making a post asking for support for a particular cause or site.

But CC’s comment “I won’t support him” caught me off guard.

I’m not offended by it at all, but it does seem unusual. Kind of like the local TV news station opening up with the line “50,000 local houses did not catch fire today.”

In a way, it’s refreshing to me, actually. But I could see some folks being offended by it.

Nonetheless, interesting….

12 Kevin D. July 15, 2009 at 9:08 pm

jay,

I’m not offended. Not at all. But like you, it just caught me off guard. Like seeing a man walking down the street with, say, a long flowing cape. You’re kind of like, “Huh. Wonder what that’s about.”

Same thing here. I already knew of CC’s dislike of Chris. I’m just wondering why he felt compelled to express it in a thread to financially support the guy. Seems a little out of place, that’s all.

13 CosmicConservative July 15, 2009 at 9:16 pm

I have no dislike of “Chris.” I’ve never met Chris.

But since I was responding in a thread that was putting the hat out for him, I didn’t want anyone to think I was going to donate to support a webcomic that I have been highly critical of.

That’s all.

14 jaymaster July 15, 2009 at 11:50 pm

That all makes sense to me.

For the record, I won’t contribute either. In the spirit of Cosmic Conservative, here’s my 2 cents:

I love the concept of reader sponsored commentary, reporting, opinion, or what have you. And IMO, I go above and beyond the call of duty in supporting such efforts. I put my money where my mouth is.

But I won’t contribute to Day by Day, because:

I don’t like comic strips. Never have, probably never will.

I do like the one scene, political cartoon genre, but that’s an entirely different art form. So I do miss Cox and Forkum,,,

I like the topics tackled in Day by Day. Aand I actually LIKE the artwork. But I don’t think it’s very well written.…

Best wishes though.

I think it was reasonable for CC to state his view. It wasn’t gratuitous. This is either a discussion thread on a blog or a group hug… for someone who isn’t even a member of the group. His point of view sheds light on the issue, because a lot of readers respect CC’s general take on things.

16 Kevin D. July 16, 2009 at 11:03 am

Maybe, Ron. Maybe not. Obviously this thread is here to support Chris. If one were to go to, say, a pro-X event and say, “I don’t really like ‘X’.” that may be their right but I don’t think someone there then asking, “If you don’t like ‘X’ why are you even here?” is unreasonable.

I generally agree with CC, and I enjoy reading what he writes, it’s just his particular comment prompted a, “Then why are you even here?” reaction from me.

Since this is a discussion thread, I don’t think the question was unreasonable.

17 Ron Coleman July 16, 2009 at 11:08 am

This is not a pro-Chris event, it’s a blog thread. Everything is up for grabs, especially here. By your logic comments should have been closed.

I also never said the question was unreasonable. I said there’s an answer to it.

18 CosmicConservative July 16, 2009 at 11:13 am

LOL, man, I’ve posted some of my most thoughtful and confrontational posts in the past few days on several different threads, and the one that gets the most attention is my comment about not donating to Day by Day.

I have to chuckle sometimes….

But thanks for the kind words!

19 Kevin D. July 16, 2009 at 11:19 am

It’s a pro-Chris blog thread. Obviously. And it’s not a thread debating the merits of what he does. We already had that discussion. CC made his feelings known there. While relating to Chris this thread wasn’t the forum to debate the merits of his work.

Maybe comments should have been closed because I don’t know why this thread is going where it is. The man is trying to make a living and needs help. Why we need to start defending or attacking what he does for that living here, when we have a thread somewhere else that did that, is beyond me.

Frankly, I accepted CC’s explanation above. I saw no need to comment further on the issue.

But I guess I was wrong.

20 Ron Coleman July 16, 2009 at 11:30 am

It is absolutely pro-Chris except to the extent its anti-Chris.

Actually I’m not sure it’s at all anti-Chris anyway. But you can’t put up a thing like that and not expect people to express their opinions.

Anti-Chris, Anti-Chris. Type that three times fast!

And now you are getting me annoyed. I am not anti-Chris. I was his first advertiser, although I too wrote him at one point and asked him about the gratuitous skin and he was not too helpful. I never laugh out loud from reading DBD but I hardly ever laugh out loud; I usually “enjoy” it.

That’s a different topic from throwing money in the hat. The whole concept is debatable. I can think of any number of things I’d rather do, and which I probably do more or less as well as Chris cartoons (no disrespect intended!), but which would not suffice as a vehicle for me to support my family. That isn’t to say that if I thought that I could do so by just asking folks for money, or having my friends do so, I might not see it differently! But that’s a choice he’s making, and the ethics and morals of whether to support are exactly what I expect to see debated here, Kevin!

I’m not saying I’ve formed an opinion one way or the other, but it is debatable. Blogs are good places for debating, so that works out great. What doesn’t, Kevin, is an attitude of entitlement on your part, even on Chris’s behalf.

21 Kevin D. July 16, 2009 at 11:35 am

See, I agreed with you up until the personal attack in your last sentence.

Don’t know why you needed to do that, but, hey, I guess it’s the Wild West here. No need to actually stop and think, “You know, maybe this isn’t the place to be saying that?”

Nope, everything goes at all times. Thanks for clearing that up, Ron.

We here at Dean’s World encourage the impulse control of an 8-year old.
