Well, I’m sad to hear that Walter Cronkite died. He lived a long and influential life.
I grew up watching him every night, so I have a nostalgic connection. It was only later in life, when I learned what he was really doing, that I lost a bit of respect.
I still think he was a man of great character, and he meant well, but I think, looking back, he was misguided at times.
It is also my opinion that his rise to power, and the direction he took with it, was the beginning of the end of the main stream media we are witnessing today.
I think we would all be better off if, instead of ending his broadcast with, “That’s the way it is”, he would have said “That’s what I think you should know today.”
But I hope he rests in piece.

“The most trusted man in America.” He abused that trust and is no different from Westmoreland, McNamara, and Nixon – who abused their offices – just from the other side. We are better off as a people trusting no one than trusting one man.
Scott,
Maybe I’m a bit soft or naïve, but I still give all of those folks the benefit of the doubt. I think the evidence at this point shows they most likely acted in ways they thought were best for us all. In other words, I don’t think any of them were evil in their intentions. Just wrong. Each of them certainly F’ed things up in some ways.
So I agree, it’s not good to trust important decisions to one man with ultimate power (or “czar”, as Obama calls them these days.)
Of course, I could be wrong too. Maybe those guys were all greedy, power hungry, deceitful bastards.
But they’re all gone now, so in the parlance of thier day, God can sort them out.

You should be commended for not speaking ill of the dead; I am not that great a man. Cronkite made Tet a success. Tet made peace with the north impossible and that led to thousands more Americans dead – and hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese. Perhaps he did what he thought was right – but the road to hell…
Although his hands are now still, they are still bloody in my opinion.
On a completely unrelated note, I was explaining to my son the origins of World War 2 – the alliances of World War 1. Almost 100 years later many of our current foreign policy problems can be traced to WWI. Amazing how that event really resonates even today.
Dean-
I need your mailing address as well as your take on the synopsis and cover letter for TOR. Hate to make this an open thread thing, but you’re not responding to me.
Love ya, bother of mine,
John

Nothing ever ends. Trace it back and you can find connections to the collapse of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Holy Roman Emperor. In the end it is simply those with power acting in ways they feel they must, while History seeks to make sense out of the mealstrom of human motives.
It can be quite sad if you reflect upon it long enough.

Just finished the last of a grueling series of tests for that ultimate dead-end job I’ve been wanting. Passed the first two of the series, so I’m feeling pretty confident about the third.
We spent a whole week with the kids! Got 2-3 hours a day in the pool, doing water aerobics and just playing with the little girls, ages 3 & 4. Not to mention they have so many stairs in their house it’s a workout just being there, ;>)
Also had gum surgery, which is no picnic. Our insurance co. is getting so that we may be going out of town for a lot of things medical, just because our small community has so very few providers “in the network.” The insurer is getting sneaky, authorizing procedures and doc visits and not bothering to tell us they won’t cover until the bill comes. It’s weird, with so many federal employees locally, that more docs, etc. won’t do what they need to do to be in the network.
For us, that’s not so bad, since we can stay with the kids, and if it’s just me I can take the Greyhound to PHX for $37 round trip if I have three weeks notice. Still, it’s only $60 for a same-day ticket, so you really can’t beat the price. (400 mile round trip)
Ooh! Ooh! my husband found a Marine Corps News Combat Correspondent Notebook laying around at work. A new one! Guess you know what I’ll be keeping my notes in for awhile! It’s a very heavy duty reporter’s size notebook with a heavy cardboard back you can write on in the field, a thick plastic spiral holding all together, and inside the front cover are the phone numbers of all the PIOs at all the Marine bases. Just love this thing! But I guess my fellow infoGeeks get where I’m coming from on this…
Dear hubby figured it was just something to write on, maybe I could use it. Oh man, can I ever!
I know I’m really late to the weekend party here, but I just found a link to a review of my feature film, Ghost Image, which will be released on DVD 8/25/09.
