Yet another Scary Muslim Email is making the rounds of the rightwing nutsphere, this time supposedly about a “dry run” hijacking on Air Tran Flight 297.
I particularly loved the way the author simply invents nonsensical Islamic jurisprudence about proper behavior in a strip club. It lends the email a touch of the surreal.

Seriously, do you not feel even the slightest shame on behalf of your co-religionists? I realize these guys were caught off-base, but your glee is a little unseemly. A lot of people are dead. It’s not like this scenario was wildly implausible, or without precedent…
I worry that even liberal Muslims like yourself are more concerned with defending your faith than acknowledging its problems and reforming it.
And if you don’t believe your religion needs any reforming, and that people need to stop confusing ignorant, ill-read, perverted, violent fucktarded assholes from yourself, how are you supposed to even react to such a statement?

If one doesn’t want to be confused with those people, maybe the proper response isn’t to yell “nutsphere!” and think the whole thing is a big laugh when some delusional rube gets a little Todd Beamer fantasy going.
There’s a certain concept of shared shame that should come into play here. Yes, this guy is a self-aggrandizing idiot. No, it is probably not a good idea to jump up and down with glee yelling “See, Muslims are being unfairly targeted for no reason!”
I mean, really. Shouldn’t liberal Muslims be sympathetic, if not having these fantasies themselves (preferably distinguishing fantasy from reality a bit better than this guy)? We’re on the same side here, right?

9/11, AQ, Taliban, Iran, Kashmir, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Hizbollah, Hamas, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Salman Rushdie, Theo Van Gogh are not really serious Islamic problems? I’d say I certainly hope the notion most Muslims are okay with those situations is just right-wing paranoia.

A step in the right direction. Incurable optimist that I am, I am heartened.
It’s now being reported the original flight crew was apparently spooked enough to decline the assignment, and a new flight crew had to be brought on. If true, that casts the incident in a different light.
Also, even weirder: Petruna apparently wasn’t even on board for that leg.
