New Hendrix: Valleys of Neptune

Jimi Hendrix has a new album that just hit the top 10, some 40 years after his death. Now that is remarkable.

I’m a little perturbed at the suggestion that it’s mostly older people interested in stuff like this. In my experience, for certain music, there is a huge age span of fans. I’m not the world’s biggest Hendrix fan, but I am an admirer and appreciator, especially of his live work–Band of Gypsies is stellar and my personal favorite. And while I am middle-aged, I was only 4 years old when the man died and didn’t even discover his work until I was about 16 years old.

And I have met a not-inconsiderable number of Hendrix fans who are younger than me, some quite a bit younger.

Honestly, I’m not all that impressed with this new track they’ve released the above video for. Haven’t heard the entire album yet. Clearly, Jimi left behind a lot of stuff he was still working on when he died, which is not unusual in artists. There’s a reason a lot of it didn’t get released: Jimi probably wasn’t entirely satisfied with a lot of it. Still, it’s hard to deny the power of that amazing guitar work.
