Back before we moved to WordPress, we had an option on the sidebar of the site where you could look up past posts by categories. Well we still categorize most posts here, but I recently noticed there doesn’t seem to be any easy way to search on those categories. I especially want people easily able to find posts categorized as “Best Discussions” and “Best of Our Contributors.”
Does anyone know how to add something to the sidebar to let people see posts marked by any specific category, so people can find our best discussions, find our best contributed articles, etc.? I’m just not a WordPress expert.

Speaking for myself, most of us told timers on DW want to look up whatever truth, fable or outright self-serving bullshit we posted with you years ago. What I just wrote here is honest and straightforward enough, so how’s about setting up your indices to accommodate just that?

there’s a Categories widget you can easily add tteh sidebar wherever you want. You can configure it to be a drop down or a list.theres already an Archives widget (drop down) on the firstsidebar below the list of contributors.
the list of categories is HUGE though. There is also a tag cloud widget you might try instead. frankly though i tend to just use teh search box, its faster.

Aziz is correct. From your your dashboard select the widgets page and drag the categories widget onto which ever sidebar you want to display the categories. I took a peek wondering if I still had access: I do but not fully enough to get to the widgets settings.
The page McKiernan links is unprotected and should have a denied index.html page in it.
Personally I would throw WordPress out to the curb and use Movable Type. MT is far better, and can import your current posts, comments, categories and trackbacks.

Don’t blame me I found it on google.
No Problem. I wasn’t blaming anyone, just pointing out a possible security risk. A tiny html file is needed that will load instead of the directory of categories saying:
403: Deans World -> Forbidden
